Very good review. Very eager to get my hands on this. Sounds very promising.

Like you Zad, I saw lots of promise in their uneven debut, looks like they are headed in the right direction. Very exciting.

First impression is similar to Zad's, low 80s score. The spoken word criticism is fair, and the musical talent is still ahead of the songwriting talent, but they are making some progress. Akercocke didn't peak until Words that Go Unspoken, so I'll remain patient and expect the songwriting to continue to improve.

Yes, I can't remember Akercocke using spoken word except in interludes, where it often worked quite well as part of their whole 'cheesy Satanic ritual' vibe. And FWIW this album grew on me a lot; it took a few plays before I really enjoyed it. Still like you say, room to improve even further.

Yeah, Akercocke managed to integrate that element of cheese, but Voices is altogether more serious, and so spoken word doesn't work for them. Not surprised to hear it is a grower of an album since it is so dense, I'll keep listening.

Listened to half the record a couple days ago and didn't get into it. I'll have to give it another shot at some point.

Try it again Husker? It is a difficult one, and after several listens I don't think it has improved. Obviously the talent is there, but I wish they'd write more tracks like 'Megan', which was easier to remember than most. I think the most recent Abigor album is a fair comparison, but that one lacked annoying spoken word passages or clean vox. And that is the big difference between Voices and Akercocke: Mendonca was a better vocalist.
