Crap of the month

Every metal show is bound to have that guy giving out copies of his bands demo. Sometimes it’s bad, rarely it’s good, most of the time it’s horrendous. Queens, New York natives Open are not only feeding on the bottom of the musical food chain, they break new ground as the worst band of all time. Their sound can best be described as an amalgamation of everything wrong with nu-metal, with epic song structures.

The self-titled masterpiece begins with a ridiculous dissonant repeated chord with pick scraping noises in what I suppose is a failed attempt to recreate the intro to Tool’s Third Eye. When the distortion and vocals kick in, things go from bad to worse. The singer’s attempts at clean vocals result in an extraordinarily bad melody that makes me cringe each time it repeats, which unfortunately is a lot. After a few minutes of torture, the band breaks into a worst-parts-of-System of a Down bridge topped off by the most terribly played drum fill I’ve heard in my life. Mercifully after nearly eight minutes of garbage, Open ends the first song: Purple Horizon.

The second and final track Threshold of Dying Souls opens with more bad vocals and unbearable clean guitar that leads to a terrible rap section and a bass solo that manages to change keys every measure, though I’m willing to bet the bassist didn’t know that. Lyrically, the band makes no sense, and seems to put together any words that rhyme or fit the melody. Introspective poetry such as “Living is a flu shot to kill what’s in my head” is spewed forth by the singer. Laughably, the song is cut off at the 11-minute mark…and this is an official demo. If anyone ever gets the opportunity to hear, or get a copy of Open’s demo I suggest you take it. The bottom line is, you’ve just got to hear it! although this cd gets my crap of the month award, it's definately a contender for crap of a lifetime...right next to St. Anger.
