Savras’ three track demo (well two and bit tracks) Design Of Power had me hooked from the first spin. There are a lot of bands under development at the moment that have aspirations to be the next Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius or Helloween. Some are making a good job of it, keeping to the basic style structure whilst creating songs that can clearly be called their own, some are coming across as ‘Tribute Bands’ copying their influences almost note perfect, whilst others are taking a path of their own design that sees them disappearing over the musical horizon into the land of WTF Was That About. Savras have elements of all three of the above in their music but fit mainly into the first two categories which means, hopefully, that they will be sticking around for some time rather than disappearing, never to be seen or heard of again.

My Portuguese is not the best but from what I can understand from their website Savras hail from São Paulo, Brazil and came to being in 2005. Members are Vocalist – Daniel Hestermann whose style is a kind a mix of Bruce Dickinson and Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens; Guitarist – Cristiano Otsedom has a penchant for the Neo-Classical which he employs to very good effect throughout the demo; Bass guitarist – Felipe Jacob takes up a lot of slack left vacant by no rhythm guitarist but is not intrusive in his style and Drummer – Leandro Fire Meza sounds a very accomplished sticksman with some innovative stick flourishes and metronomic quality high speed double bassing. There is also some growling backing vocals in there which add a juxtaposing ‘Evil’ slant to the melodic vein of the music.

There are times when the music comes from the book ‘How To Play Melodic Power Metal’, but there are a lot of other parts that make your ears prick up. It’s not just what is played but also how it is played and the overall sound that makes Savras just that little bit different from all the rest of the Melodic Power Metal bands that the scene seems to be awash with at the moment. Hopefully, with a couple of in-country tours and maybe some support slots under their belts Savras will gain in confidence, build on their musicianship and produce a full length that will rattle the Melodic Metal ‘Old Guard’, who, at the time of writing, seem to be sitting on their laurels and pumping out mediocrity by the cartload claiming it to be ‘Taking their sound to a new level!’ I have a feeling that Savras will soon take their sound to a new level and it will be a damn sight higher level than some of the ‘Established’ bands are playing at now! Get a listen to Design Of Power at the Band’s Website, it’s in Portuguese but I’m sure non Portuguese speakers can figure out where the music’s at.
