It's not everyday you get a metal band that has a Playboy bunny in it. I don't know if it's ever happened before, but Huntress are now counted as one amongst that, err, small elite group? Now you'll get any images of this being some horrific glam/poppy metal act due to their singer's resume, but it's most definitely not. Grounded firmly in the 80's trad/power metal camp this is a pretty ballsy slab of music. Vocalist Jill Janus has a surprising amount of grit in her voice that works very well with this genre, and can pull of some what would be ball busting falsetto notes that'd be expected from the likes of Iced Earth which can be heard in the EP's title track Off With Her Head. The music itself is pretty good as well, nothing exactly new but for what it is you can't really pick out too many problems with it. The soloing here from lead guitarist Blake Meahl is very impressive and the riffs have that headbanging quality about them that all good bands of this genre should have, notably in Hollow Hills which has the trademark gallop of this style with some excellent leads riding over the top of it all. The choice of production on here is quite interesting too. It's far from polished, going for a slightly rawer, more natural sound that does the band plenty of favours even if it is a little rough around the edges at parts. It's a short little EP but serves as a nice introduction from a band that aren't relying on a gimmick that could easily have catapulted them into some more "mainstream" attention, instead focussing on the important part that is their music.

The EP is available for free on the band's Bandcamp page here.
