Back in 1984 Vulcain had a singer with a raucous voice, they played high energy pedal to the metal rock'n'roll and loved to show their denims and leather on fast mechanical machines... Doesn’t that remind you of something? Some other power trio lead by the ugliest singer/bassist there’s ever been? One still very much alive?

So, well, Vulcain were hastily labeled the "french Motörhead"... which was kind of accurate but still not spot on... First their lyrics were not all sex drugs and rock and roll based as most Motörhead's were. Most of Vulcain’s had an inclination towards social/political subjects (with the major exception of the French traditional drinking song La Digue du Cul and the more fantastic based Le Fils de Lucifer) not unlike that of Trust which so obviously modeled their inspiration.

Musically now. There's more than just the Motörhead influence here, even though it’s the undeniable basis of Vulcain’s sound. Dig a little deeper and you’ll find what sets both bands apart. First there's almost no punk influences to be found in the Frenchmen’s music... Once again the band follows the traditions of early 80’s rocking’ French metal acts such as Trust or Warning…with more aggressive vocals and a harshness often found in contemporary speed metal. More importantly, they do it surprisingly well with a varied and efficient selection of songs ranging from medium to fast paced. In the end, the comparison to Motörhead mostly stands on Vincent Puzio's throaty, abrasive vocals and his ability to get the best of it, something he shares with Lemmy who surely has been a major influence of his.

The vocals may be kind of an acquired taste and the production is nothing spectacular but, for those who like rock ’n’ roll infused 80's metal, Vulcain’s debut will be a delight. Too bad it was their only real good album... (revised version of my Metal Archives review)
