I had great expectations for this record. First of all because this band is somewhat
an all star band from Norway (gathering ex band mates from Dimmu Borgir
and Old Man's Child) and secondly because their first album was quite good,
although not what I had expected, mainstream black metal in the veins of The
Kovenant, Old Man's Child and Dimmu Borgir. However, although my expectations
were high, I was afraid the band would pursue in a different approach than their
aforementioned renowned compatriots. And so they did ! One could say it's their
business if they don't want to pursue in the black metal direction, but I am the
guy in charge of this review and I like bands from Norway who play either mainstream
black metal such as Dimmu Borgir, The Kovenant, Old Man's Child or bands
who play gothic metal such as Sirenia, Tristania, The Sins Of Thy Beloved.
What if Sirenia came out and played power metal ? What if Gamma Ray came out and played black metal ? I don't know if you get my point of view, but what I mean is that I am truly disappointed the band did not pursue in a typical black metal direction. The guys from Susperia want to play thrash metal of the new millennium ? All right, good for them, but I am not interested in bands such as Susperia or Destruction who militate in favour of the revival of old thrash metal. Now that you guys know about my disappointment, you probably want to read a fair review of this sophomore album ? Well, the first thing that I can say is that I hate the moaning of Athera, the singer, and unfortunately it's quite predominant throughout this album. That stuff is rather monotonous in it's entire length, and it's getting hard to come up with good comments about it. In fact I don't want to say more about this record. To me this kind of metal is out of date, and the band should go ahead instead of looking back. |
