Most people get that eventually. If you keep your 360 somewhere where it gets a lot of air and generally just be careful with it, it should last you a long time. I've heard of some people having to return their 360s over 10 times, luckily the newer versions are less likely to get the RRoD.
One of my really good friends who is a huge game / computer aficionado told me what usually happens with the red ring.
Basically, he said that the main chip is held in place by plastic supports. As the system gets hotter, the plastic does what plastic does at high temperatures and melts, causing the chip to fall out of place. He sent his in a while ago, and found out that they just gave him a new one, since he made a mark with a red marker somewhere on the console.
If that is indeed true, that is ridiculous on the part of whomever designed the console. Most plastics melt around 90 F, or 32.2 C
