But that was album number 11! Most bands get shit after album 3. Iron Maiden made 7 awesome albums in a row.

I think this has to do with different definitions of what a "band" is--namely, a fan's definition and a band member's definition. if you're in Morbid Angel, the phrase "Morbid Angel album" probably just means "album my band made" in your head. But to a fan, "Morbid Angel" doesn't really refer to four dudes; it refers to their body of work, to its aesthetic and its essence. You might respect and admire Trey Azagthoth, but when you buy a "Morbid Angel album," it's not because he's such an awesome dude that you're willing to pay for whatever he just made. You're paying for your version of "Morbid Angel." That doesn't mean it should sound exactly like what already exists; it just means it should feel like it's part of the same progression/series/aesthetic/idea/however you want to put it. It's kind of pompous to think that fans of your work should be such huge fans of YOU YOURSELF that you can sell them whatever you feel like selling them. Sure, an artist should be and is free to be true to his art and make what he wants to make, or what comes to him; but if you're gonna make X because you've been making Y for years and you want to try something new, you can't just call it Y , sell it to Y's fans and tell them they're being unfair if they don't like it. This is why side projects exist.

I think you're making a really good point here but I don't know if I agree with you. When I look for a Morbid Angel, I could look for simply "death metal" as a generic label which MA fits in their earlier albums. However, when you are buying a band's album, you are buying those individuals' work as artists. You are buying their efforts, not as representatives for a broad genre but creators of what they want to do. You're purchasing based on past efforts, however what they are doing now shouldn't have to be reduced to a consumable package. You should like the band for what creativity they are able to demonstrate rather than if they meet these five criterion of what it takes to be what you expect of them.

In all fairness, I was too young to listen to metal back in 86 (and also living in a dictatorship where this kind of music was not tolerated - too rebellious perhaps) so I didn't catch its impact. Retrospectively, it certainly doesn't seem quite that bad, especially when you compare it to bad albums from other big acts, like you say. And speaking of Priest, I actually think they had a bigger letdown years before, in Point Of Entry. I rate that below Turbo.

You have to remember JP had even recorded sessions with the infamous Stock/Aitken & Waterman (Kylie Minogue, Rick Astley and all that crap). Thankfully, those sessions have never seen the light of day but the rumour was already spreading when the album came out. And what did we get? A pop metal album! Shame on them.
Still, Turbo Lover is a nice song but so was Frantic.

That's sad but true. Probably 90% of the bands have this syndrome. Hibria, Evergrey, Dream Theater, Kreator, Metallica, Megadeth, Dark Tranquililty, In Flames, Iced Earth, Edguy, Morbid Angel, Testament (well, they only did one good album), Overkill (great return with Ironbound), etc, etc.On the good side, I can only think of Death, Iron Maiden and Deathspell Omega.

Right off the top of my head, I'd say that Dimmu, Tool, CoF and a bunch of others actually got BETTER a few albums in and released classic albums much later in their careers....but they, too, trailed off eventually.

Strangely enough, I was on the floor at Madison Square Garden for AC/DC, and it was the loudest show I was EVER at. Ever.

So 3 listenable songs out of a largely nu-metal/industrial album makes it worth a 89%? Whatever works, thus far if it's not Rob Zombie or Marilyn Manson worship such as "Radikult", then it's generic dm with horrible vocals. The score really needs to reflect the absolute horror that this album is

I don't consider the album death metal by their past standards, the only death metal songs being "Blades of Baal" and "Nevermore". With "Existo vulgore" taking a more groove metal approach, and the rest being a jumbled mallcore failure with obvious flirtations to nu-metal and industrial.

yeah, the cries of nu-metal are absolutely hilarious to me. Just because a song has groove doesn't make it nu-metal. Remember "where the slime live"? The tracks with groove are still more complex than that and are absolutely nothing like nu-metal in sound or composition. At least the lyrics complaint or failed genre mash-up complaints make sense...

I mean I wasn't expecting much after Heretic (and the passage of 8 fucking years), but this is a joke.

Had they gone the Godflesh (thinking Streetcleaner era) route, I daresay they would have made at least 90% of us happy. Maybe in another 8 years we'll get lucky!
