He directed a bunch of stuff in the 80s into the mid-90s before dying young. 1989's 'Decalogue' was a miniseries for Polish TV. Ten parts, each very loosely based one of the Ten Commandments. He did the Three Colors Trilogy in the 90s, which featured a much higher budget done in post-Cold War France and got him international attention.
If you can tolerate cheap production, subtitles, and slow pace, I can't recommend The Decalogue enough. I should note: Stanley Kubrick said 'The Decalogue' was the only masterpiece he knew in his life.
