plus Qatar is really tiny, they're going to build more stadiums than the country could possibly absorb. probably building those easily deconstructed ones that you can just ship in containers somewhere else.
all this after in the Portugal/Spain bid they cut out Sporting Lisbon's stadium because the same city, a capital with two major clubs, already had Benfica's Estádio da Luz in the bid.
not to mention how hot it's probably going to be.. games at 9AM/9PM anyone?
Russia, they'll have to fly everywhere, but at least it's an actual football-playing country.
Portugal/Spain i don't know what to feel. on one hand it'd be great to host a World Cup, and we proved we can do it in Euro 2004, on the other hand the bid itself was beyond stupid. Spain had 18 in 21 stadiums, leaving only FC Porto's, Benfica's and Sporting's in Lisbon (with rumous like i said that Sporting would be cut in favour of Algarve in the south of the country). i know that a WC stadium needs a minimum capacity, but surely this is open to debate?! it's not like 40.000+ people will be lining up to watch fucking North Korea vs Cameroon! plus, building scores of massive fucking stadiums promotes massive projects with no chance of future returns. i bet the stadiums in south africa are mostly empty after the world cup!
