so fingon? how did you do?
and today is another huge match:
SL Benfica vs Sporting Lisbon
@ Estádio da Luz, Lisbon
the Benfica/Sporting rivalry is the biggest in Portuguese football, even though title-wise the two biggest clubs are SLB and FC Porto.
this time it's a special match, as the game will practically decide who gets 2nd place and a slim shot at the title (leaders Porto lost yesterday) and who's stuck in 3rd.
some legendary matches come to mind, namely Benfica's humiliation in 1986 when they lost to Sporting 7-1 at SCP's own old José Alvalade stadium, with former SCP coach Manuel Fernandes scoring 4 goals. despite the humiliation, Benfica still won the championship that year.
Benfica fans have fond memories of the 1994 game, also at the old Alvalade. SLB won 6-3, defeating "Professor" Carlos Queiroz's side (with players like Krassimir Balakov and the young Luís Figo), and pretty much securing the title. it was probably Benfica's swansong from the glory days, as the next title would only come under "the old fox" Geovanni Trapattoni's command in 2005.
so yeah, er, great match today, hopefully it'll end with another legendary victory for Benfica.
