Speaking of black metal that just passes me by.. I got my hands on Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice a few days ago and I just don't understand why both you and Aaron listed it as the number 1 release of 2004. Its not BAD by any means but I am having trouble finding anything exceptional about it.Which leads to my question, do you think there are any particular "stepping stone" black metal albums that are especially important to "get" (not just own, I mean, really get into), before someone can appreciate an album like Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice? I am obviously missing something but I do not know the remedy!

Listening to it over and over again. It helps me each time I have a problem with "getting into an album". I take my headphones (gives you a feeling that you are indivisible with the music) and for about an hour listen to it trying to follow songs' structures, to see melody in raw buzzing, to see complication in simplicity, etc.

Woods of Ypres have a demo called Against the Seasons which is good, thought (IMHO) not as good as Pursuit... Its much colder, winter black metal, while Pursuit.. is summer black metal. (If there is such a thing, heh).
I preffer their previous album/demo Against the Seasons, which is more Black Metal than Pursuit...; I guess it's a matter of taste because both are really good.

I agree, Against the seasons is clearly better to me...

Yes that usually works but it is something you have to force yourself to do. I wonder if Daniel or Aaron (or anyone else on the forum that thinks as highly of Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice as they do) had to force themselves or whether it "made sense" to them straight away.

I listen to everything at least five times before I judge it, and Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice clicked for me on the fourth listen.

When I listen to music, I try to grasp everything- that's why I enjoy music that feeds off of and has to do with human emotions and such things.

All the advice I can give you is to listen to it some more, because it really is the top album of the year, in more then one opinion.

And try to think only about the music, let your mind be pummeled by it.

I wouldn't say you FORCE yourself; the thing is that many Black Metal albums require several listens in order to understand what is happening, in order to, as Aaron said, click.

Don't give up, just keep listening to it. Headphones as Desolate said are a very good way to be engulfed by the music.

Maybe the problem is that you just don't like the album, which is possible, just be sure to listen to it quite a few times before dropping it. And even if you drop the album, maybe in one or two months you play it again and you'll be surprised to learn that you like it.

Don't give up.

Daniel, dear friend! Thanks so much for having this album grad my attention again! I must say it's really starting to work on me! I didn't listen to it with full attention the first times, and I almost forgot about it...

Heh well perhaps "force" is too strong a word - it is not something I dislike doing.

I am still trying with this album and am making slow progress. But I still suspect that I am missing some sort of stepping stone album that can bridge the gap for me between commercial black metal (which I like quite a bit - dimmu, immortal, graveworm, cradle, borknagar, etc) and bands such such as Deathspell that are not lead or symphony driven. I understand that alot of people see something "else" in the music but I do not know what. (yet.)

Now I'll just have to wait for 1-9 weeks for them to arrive...

I've paid 24 euros. I need to pay 32 more when they'll arrive (delivery is free and I'll get a 10 euro discount (I've counted it), cause I'm the shop's constant customer :wink: )

I recently bought hamerfalls, one Crimson night.

Truely awseome album. The only thing about it i disliked about it was the bass solo track. It is just boring to me

I will give it another go - I much prefer Pursuit... at the moment.

I also tried Green Hell since your sig mentions it as your favourite album but I'm having trouble dealing with the extremely raw production.

Work with it, it will sure be rewarding once you get it. Since the moment Gast told me about it I've listened to it non-stop.
