I think it's borderline - watched much of it with my sister and both loved it.
It's campy horror a la Army of Darkness. It's jokes and good fun, but seriously the material that it operates with is dense. There is a whole discourse on social work in that last season that is crazy insightful.
ive never watched buffy but you would compare it to army of darkness? obviously not subject matter but as far as the humor and that kind of thing? if this is true i may have to watch buffy.
I think in terms of the humor that Sam Raimi relies on in AoD, Joss Whedon might be the best in imitating that. Because we all know Raimi fails at striving for that humor these days, e.g., Campbell's cameos in Spiderman. I'll admit that Buffy's jokes rely very much on 90s teenage dynamics and so you may not enjoy it, but seriously the jokes are comparable. Somebody else interject in this discussion. I feel like I'm making a rather bold claim that I can't support except with emotions.
