On the brief listen I had I didn't find it that captivating. I actually found to be rather mediocre. But that's just me, because I know another guy that loves the album. I think this albums lacks a bit in song-writing insofar as they have to have some diversity in terms of their leads in scaling them better and more effectively. I know it's PL trademark but maybe changing the formula just a small bit will give them different results which leaves more space and breathing room in between notes.
Although I was ready to dismmiss this as nothing special, with repeated listens, and there are many more to come, I really enjoy this album. It contains many memorable riffs and some really cool atmospheric moments. The guitar is definately a notch up from past releases and the result is Paradise Lost's heaviest release to date. "Theories From Another World" is the perfect exemple for representing the album as a whole. Dynamique, atmospheric and one hell of an ending that will leave you wanting more. The title track "Tragic Idol" has some nice vocal inflections and variations that makes it also a standout. Crucify's guitar crunch and solo, Fear of Impending Hell's slow acoustic start combined with it's heavy chorus adds punch and variety to the album. An album definately worth investing time in.
You leave me wondering if we're listening to the same albums with some of the comments you make.
Yep. Even with the Paradise Lost albums I like, I sure don't invest time in, because after all, it is basically the same formula with the same pop song structure. Theories From Another World is a cut above their standard fare, true, but Honesty in Death is some of their most lazy, predictable material.
