Saw Death Angel, Testament and Anthrax Saturday night. I really never got into Death Angel so they were kinda so-so. Didn't put on a bad performance by any means but their songs seem overly long.
Testament was pretty awesome. Gene Hoglan was filling in for whoever their drummer is. I can't remember. He did the same for Benante (?) later on in the night. Yeah, Gene Hoglan was awesome. I think he rode the double bass more than either band usually does but that's his style. He drums so non-chalantly like it ain't no thing. Barely breaks a sweat after two sets. His drums have such a nice sound especially compared to Death Angel guy's.
As for Testament, Skolnick seems like he's not super into metal anymore. He's too smile-y and chill. Still a badass though. Overall, just solid stuff from them. Great setlist and a great performance. The same could be said about Anthrax. Didn't love how many new tracks they played but go figure they're touring for that album. Scott Ian called the crowd out for being lame and then shit got pretty intense in terms of moshing.
The worst part about the concert was the audience. Everyone was kinda being assholes compared to the people who go to death metal shows. Tons of forty to fifty year old men, drunk and trying to relive their youth. It was a constant wrestling for spots that distracted me from the performance. By the time, Anthrax got to the good stuff like Indians I just headed for the pit. My ability to hang with huge motherfuckers impressed even myself.
