I think it says in the booklet that they rushed the album to have it out on Halloween '86. that's why there is such a drop in quality and intensity. still, a pretty good listen. a little more intricate than Seven Churches.
I remember that.More intricate, I agree, but Seven Churches just fucking slays.Best death metal album ever, along with Scream Bloody Gore (though I know this statement will draw ire from some).It sounds just like their logo against a plain black backdrop suggests.

I would have also added Morbid Angel's Altars of Madness but, yeah, that's pretty much it.

You are referring to In The Nightside Eclipse, I take it... hmmm... 10/10, absolutely.
One of the reasons Black Metal appeals to me is the purity of it that is so reminiscent of the metal from the 80s.
It's a very vague and nebulous and vaporous notion, and something that I would have a difficult time in verbalizing, but to me Black Metal is really an offshoot of 80s metal.

Wolf's best albums of the 2000-2009 decade thread has me pouring over the years through the nostalgia. Great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Like I said, it's more about the purity of the music than an actual sound, or even any given style.
