It's a simpler, more direct approach. I know that's what disappointed me. I expected Nevermore to keep moving forward and they did the opposite.
Add to that there are no instant classics on OC and you've got what many, including me, consider a feeble offering from a band who used to give us so much more.

It's simpler and more direct, but I don't see why that's a bad thing. You say there aren't any "instant classics," but that's a kinda silly thing to look for when a new album comes out. In any case, Moonrise, Emptiness Unobstructed, and the title track all rank up there as some of the highest quality Nevermore songs, and the rest are really damn good too. Just because they stepped back from the Prog aspects of This Godless Endeavor doesn't mean it's "feeble."

I think everyone was expecting another Godless Endaevor.

I think that the Obsidian Conspiracy happily sits along all of their albums.

As for instant hits, I've never encountered an album I instantly liked. But out of my 3 latest purchases (Overkill, Nevermore and Dark Tranquillity) the Nevermore one grew on me the quickest and within 3 listens I was fully acquainted with the album and could remember the riffs and melodies.
