I always hear about these guys but I've never really listened to them and I think the time I did was a bad time.

What's their best record, or best 3 records that maybe have a varied performance?

Pretty much everything they've done is gold. If you want the variety, then check out Times of Grace or Through Silver in Blood for when they were heavier, and The Eye of Every Storm or A Sun that Never Sets for when they calmed down a little.

Times of Grace, a recommendation from ebd, is the album that actually made me get it, I guess. Souls at Zero and Through Silver in Blood, I can respect, but never loved.

Glad that one helped. Yeah, I think Times of Grace is the most immediate, though nothing is lost through the instant power of that album. Noodles gave good examples of the two different sounds, but I'll add that Given to the Rising was probably my favorite of the post Times of Grace albums, which in a sense tried to combine the heavier elements of their older material with the less aggressive direction of their newer albums.

All of their Souls at Zero and beyond material is at least good, of course (haven't heard their very early stuff), but when I think of quintessential Neurosis it has to be Through Silver in Blood.

One of their most immediate tracks:

Through Silver in blood

Times of grace did nothing for me, it got old after the seventh song.

Their best run was Souls at Zero through Through Silver in Blood, all of which were rife with ferocity and experimentation. Everything thereafter sounds dull and worn-out to me.
