Good old Labour, starting the spin already.

Wonderful to sit in a conference full of other Lib Demmers proclaiming the party's values and hearing them fully reiterated by Cable, Huhne, Hughes, Clegg and co. Almost unanimous ratification of the coalition, a proud day for the party.

Seems like a solid coalition. Let's hope your new government can right some of the wrongs.

Indeed. Feels like Britain has finally joined the other grown-ups around the European table, although of course we'll have to see to what extent the xenophobic impulse of some Tories can be tamed. I have faith in our guys, though, and if we can get through the next five years that'll be victory enough for what we've been saying in some form or another for the past 90 years. Interesting times.

To be honest, Britain does need a tiny bit of xenophobia. Albion is like the promised land for many (mainly islamic) passers-through here. We have lots of problems in the harbours of Antwerp and Seabruges with migrants locking themselves in cargo containers and then suffocating. Mafia-like people trafficking. Increased control on illegal immigration is a top priority, methinks, so long as us continentals don't get backlashed for that

Heh, well, we've had to agree to the Tory immigration cap, although there's no practical way of working it. I liked our policy of improved border police and reinstated exit controls - illegal immigration is a problem that one country cannot solve alone. And fear not, we may have shackles on them to some extent but Little England is still alive and well in the form of the Tory party.

The Nation bashing the coalition because the LibDems won't be able to stop the massive Thatcher cuts on the way. More like just bashing the conservatives actually, like always.

And Menzies Campbell, even though he eventually agreed to the coalition.

Don't believe the hype (especially from the NS). Labour are spinning like mad to make us look like a party on the brink of collapse, which is complete and utter bollocks. Did you read what Kennedy actually said?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2010 ... tion-views

It's interesting, his choice of words - not critical, but not full of praise either. Like many, he's waiting and seeing. As the Graun has it:

Quote:
In his article Kennedy suggests that he would have preferred to leave the Tories trying to govern as a minority administration, guaranteeing support only on vital economic decisions and in votes of confidence. "But the understandable anxiety among colleagues of an early second election scuppered that option."

Basically, that way lieth ruin, so we must do this. The only difference in the Lib Dem leadership is how optimistic they're being. Paddy, especially, is as awesome as ever:

Quote:
However, Ashdown decided to support the coalition after seeing the agreement, which he called a "masterpiece" filled with 80% Lib Dem policies. "I said 'fuck it'… I am prepared to fight with you even if it is inside the Tory party. I can never resist a fight, and if this is what you are fighting for you better count me in."

There are dissenters, but they are in the extreme minority, and seem to be content to wait and see rather than cut and run to a Labour party which has been more authoritarian in power than Thatcher was. Everyone from Simon Hughes to David Steel is aboard - there was apparently more fuss over the SDP/Liberal merger. This 'Lib Dems in crisis' nonsense taken from today's conference is extremely negative reporting on the part of the Graun etc, seeing the worst in the party's typical democratic process which allows for voices of dissent where other parties would marginalise them.

Look, I just posted that because other people's optimism sickens me. In reality I don't actually care what Charles Kennedy thinks of owt :P

what are you on about?

In all sincerity- the only reason for the NS link is because I am an ill-tempered person who likes to deflate other peoples' optimism especially if they are Lib Dems. If you say they're all on board, then I've no doubt that's true.

There's no call for that sacrasm
