Very possibly!

this may possibly be the best first round ever. everything is just so intense. every hit, blocked shot, turn over, pass up the middle, etc is just so awesome and scary at the same time.

olympics = overrated, playoffs = best ever

Well, that nearly convinces me to pay closer attention. The biggest problem is we dropped the HDTV package from our cable to save some money over the summer so it's just not the same seeing it on regular 4:3 without HD.

Geez, what a pathetic whiner I'm being

These playoffs are amazing. It's almost right up there with the Olympics.

If Washington don't take this series I will be baffled. Way to blow all your guns in the regular season.

if Ovechkin could score at a regular pace, like Corsby, and Semin could just score at all then this series was over in 4 or 5 games. But, neither are scoring consistently, and Halak has been insane.

I don't think it is so much Ovechkin as it is Halak. And it would be helpful if Semin did something.

"Ovechkin stops, to pull up his socks
Pop goes the Ruskie!"

Playoff hockey always makes me quote the Hanson Brothers (band, not movie characters)

So if a team had Mike Green and Joe Thornton would they ever win a game in the playoffs? Just an unconsciously stupid penalty by Green leads to goal 1 right at the end of the first period. Halak is great, Washington is on life support.

well well well

I didn't watch the game because of work, but I did listen on the radio and I saw the highlights. Halak was friggin amazing again, too bad he couldn't get the shut-out.

Round two:

Eastern conference:
Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Montreal Canadiens

Boston Bruins vs. Philladelphia Flyers

Western conference:
San Jose Sharks vs. Detroit Red Wings

Chicago Blackhawks vs. Vancouver Canucks

predictions?

Pittsburgh, Boston, Detriot and no clue on the 4th series, other than it should be great hockey to watch.

I am a Canadians fan for yet another series. Halak is a man on a mission.

A Briuns-Canadians ECF would be epic, though neither team may score.

What an upset. Montreal has some heart and Halak is unbelievable.

I'd like to see Habs vs Bruins and Hawks vs Wings so we get an all original six cup final. After an original six team wins and all the hooplah of the playoffs are over I can go back to crying about my Leafers.

Fuck me.. President´s trophy winners tend to suck come playoffs.

Anyway, very impressive by the Habs.

Habs, Philly, Detroit, Canucks.

This is really a false myth. Before this year:

The Presidents' Trophy has been awarded 24 times.

- The following PT teams have won the Cup: 86-87 Oilers, 88-89 Flames, 93-94 Rangers, 98-99 Stars, 00-01 Avalanche, 01-02 Red Wings, 07-08 Red Wings (29%).
- The following teams lost in the Cup finals: 89-90 Bruins, 94-95 Red Wings (8%).
- The following teams lost in the first round: 90-91 Blackhawks, 99-00 Blues, 05-06 Red Wings, 08-09 Sharks (17%).

Ha, well I got pretty much everything wrong last round- the one upset I chose in the eastern conference was of course the only one that didn't happen. Still, I'm not complaining that I was wrong about the Habs losing in 6. And the Wings won, so I'm happy about that as well. But seriously, who would have predicted New Jersey out in 5 and all three division champions in the east out?

Here we go:

Habs vs. Pens: Pens in 6. I will be more than happy to be proven wrong again. Please sweep the Pens, Habs. I'm just not sure if they can keep up the pace for that much longer, especially with only a one day rest between series. And the Pens do have extensive playoff experience. Go Habs go!

Chicago vs. Vancouver: Chicago in 7. Should be a great series, and I think it can really go either way.

San Jose vs. Detroit: Wings in 6. Another tough one to call. The Wings are an older team and Howard a rookie goaltender. As usual, the Sharks should win this series. But I have no faith in the Sharks, especially since Nabokov looked shaky at times against the Avs and their first line looks once again to be choking (though I do like Marleau, so I hope that he at least starts playing better). Go Wings go!

Boston vs. Philadelphia: Boston in 6. On the one hand, I completely underestimated Philly- I thought they were a team as dead as any, and couldn't believe how they destroyed Jersey. I didn't have high hopes for Boston, either. But in the goaltending battle between Rask and Boucher, I'm going for Rask. Add the injuries of Carter and Gagné, and I don't think the Flyers are getting by this round.

Bring on the Habs-Bruins conference final!

When the Habs made it a 3-2 hockey game, I actually thought they could make a game out of it. But Halak looked tired and Montreals pk (penalty kill not the kneegrow) was just not up to par with the amount of skill displayed by Pitts. Big losses for both teams though as both Andrei Markov and Jordan Staal left the game and did not return. If either are gone for any stretch of time, it could really hurt both teams. Markov is one of the better 2-way d-men in the league and Staal is probably the best 3rd line center in the league.

So anyway, I think Pitts takes this series but the Habs will make it interesting with some rest and a noisy crowd in Montreal. But still Pens win it in 5 or 6.
