right now, i'm reading the driving theory book. i'm learning how to drive.

this year i read
-angels and demons
-The Godfather by Mario Puzzo (BRILLIANT!!)
-pursuit by Thomas Perry (utter shit)
-Harry Potter, the new one
-Omerta (mario puzo) - also great
-Kane and Abel (Jeffrey Archer) - this book is incredible! really liked it! read it if you get the chance..
-The Firm (John Grisham) - very nice.

could you elaborate on these... read your comments and checked Amazon and they seemed like good reads:

-The Shadow Of The Wind
-the Ben Elton books
-Metamorphosis by Kafka
-The Pillars of The Earth

and a few questions:
-i hated Pursuit by Thomas Perry, but he has other books like Metzger's Dog that were praised and stuff. think i'll like it?
-i loved Omerta and The Godfather by Mario Puzo. which other books of his should i read?

also i read a bit of "hell bent for leather" at fnac lisbon.. didn't seem like a good book. the general tone was like he was some old fart that "outgrew" heavy metal and that it's just a phase people go through. fuck off! also his idea of metal appears to be led zep and def leppard.

Ben Elton is, imo, the most talented comedy writer out of UK lately... I like how he points at society flaws with an accurate precision while remaining damn funny..

the best example of his work is "High Society" ( http://www.booklore.co.uk/PastReviews/E ... Review.htm )where politics, tv reality, show business, drug war, prostitution (etc) mix together in a wel constructed and very funny novel... try it !

ok, tell ya what - i'll give Ben Elton a chance and you read Kane and Abel :P

seriously, it rules. these 2 kids are born in the same day, but in different places - one to a wealthy Boston family, another in poverty in Poland. they eventually meet eachother and clash and... read the book.

To a non-Brit he's funny, but to a Brit....not so good.

So, how come he is successful in UK ? :?

I strongly disagree... it's not great, but it's fine... and the point of Ben Elton is more what he writes than how he writes it...

Z, Rad, tell me, what did you read of him ?

More for his old (good) comedy stuff, and some crappy musicals he's been involved with, than for his books, I'd think. And sadly, being successful in the UK is not yet an indication of quality!

I read High Society, and another one that I can't remember. It wasn't bad, but it didn't really seem good to me.

For the same sort of thing that I liked, there's a Scottish writer called Christopher Brookmyre, this one's quite good:

Why the use of your favourite emoticon? Doubting that I actually read anything of his?

Stark - it had such an over the top, club-you-over-the-head, juvenile 'corporations are baaaad we must care for the environment' message that it became almost unreadable.

Yeah, the ruling classes are evil. Groundbreaking stuff, Ben.

yes I was doubting... sorry Rad'...

I haven't read that one so i won't comment on its quality (or lack of) but I can only advise you to try High Society, not the novel of the century but a very well shaped and clever one...

@ Z, I'll try that Christopher Brookmyre of yours and I'll tell you what i thought... thx for the tip :D

For anthropology class. I keep having to stop and re-start, though. There's some pretty vivid description of female circumcision, and I can't stand to read it for very long.

hey Carnifex, ever read the Papalagui?

it's this dude from some remote island who visits a western country (germany, i think...) and writes everything down so he can describe it to his people back home. some guy got hold of it and got it published.

pretty cool book...

Finned it, not that great.

As for the fucking liar, ex-Lord Archer has quite the little history over here. For the basics:
