There's actually a famous philosopher who goes in depth into this. Albert Camus is his name. He interprets the story of Sisyphus and applies it to life in the industrial era, comparing the upward rolling of the rock and falling without ever reaching the top, much to how the american work ethic was back in the 1920's. No one ever saw anything to completion, all they did was do the same repetetive task over and over. He then concluded that the only logical escape to the monotony would be suicide. But he continues on to say that no matter the reason behind things, humans will continue to thrive and never give in to the logistics of things.
