Hit. The books are fun and so are the movies.

I still need to get around to reading the 6th one, though.

I might not like them at all, but I was about to start reading that to see what happens and you've fucked it up for me...cheers.

I already know what happens thanks to a certain fad that circulated ytmnd, which I found to be quite funny by the way.

I really liked the last two films...and that's about as far as I go with it.

First book was painfully bad, second and third were ok, but the most recent few have been bloody awful. Overrated crap.

Miss

It's a proof that man is a silly cattle herd who buys everything that is hyped clever enough.
It's a redestibution of well-earned money from millions of honest working people to one single mediocre producer of something without any merit. Weird!

I disagree about it having any merit, her writing style is easier to read than practically any other author I've read (except maybe Hunter S Thompson).

I've never read them personally, but if it gets kids into reading then I can't complain.

The problem is, the way I see it, that it gets kids into reading Harry Potter, and Harry Potter alone. About 1/15 of every kid I've talked to who's read Harry Potter (and I've talked to a lot) goes on to read other stuff; the rest just wait for the next book. I also imagined that it would act as a gateway into the fantasy world for a lot of people; after all, if adults can enjoy something with as high a magic level and cheese factor as Harry Potter, why wouldn't they enjoy something like George R.R. Martin, or Guy Gavriel Kay, or Susannah Clarke's Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell? Dissapointingly, it really doesn't seem like Potter does any of these things really, both for adults and kids, unlike, say, The Lord of the Rings or Narnia. I mean, I enjoy Potter much more than Narnia, but it really seems like a passing fad for this reason, and that it'll fade into obscurity in about 5-10 years or so.

lol, cynicism

Is it wrong that "millions of honest working people" just truly enjoy reading something?

American children just reading one book is fine by me. These little shits just sit in front of the TV all day, and think books and knowledge are gay. Thanks, Conservative Agenda.

Yes, its nice that they're reading one book, but it doesn't change anything, which is the probkem. Now instead of thinking books and knowledge are gay, they think books and knowledge are gay with the exception of Harry Potter. True, that is a tiny bit better, yet it doesn't really make kids more susceptible to reading other things or turning off the TV (with the exception, of course, of when Harry Potter 7 comes out).

That is very true, but apparently adults (from what I'm told) like mature books too. The main thing that pisses me off about this is that adults will rave about Harry Potter and yet still refer to the fantasy genre in a derogatory way (and in fact, Harry Potter isn't even stocked in the fantasy genre, when its entire plot is based on magic, unlike most fantasy I read). Its the prejudice against the genre that pisses me off.
