well for audio you could get itunes or winamp and for video your best bet is video lan or media player classic+codecs.

I found iTunes to be kind of a bloatware. It took like 7 seconds just to start up. I prefer Foobar2000:

Lots of supported formats, is small and quick to start up, and supports Winamp DSPs.

Wow, the very same happened to me some weeks ago.

Have you tried uninstalling Media Player in the "install/remove software" or whatever it's called in the English version? I did and it just downgraded Media Player to the version I had before clicking "yes" on that fucking update notice.
