Idiocracy - Would have been a lot better if they'd made it more subtle/believable. I still laughed in a few parts though.

saw Slither for the second time.
Very funny especially the stupid mayor and Nathan Fillion's character.

R.V - Amazing, that even in a pretty crappy film like this, Robin William and Jeff Daniel's talent still shines through.

Whale Rider - Only watched it because Lisa Gerrard did the soundtrack (which I have), and it's a pretty good film, but not particularly amazing.

Unfaithful - Pretty good. DCD on soundtrack, coincidentally. Isn't Richard Gere like a rubbish Harrison Ford, though?

It seems everybody is seeing this movie. I didn't mind it, but other movies do the dysfunctional family thing better.

Some friends and I made a movie a couple of years ago, it's short stupid and funny. If I can find a way to post it I will.

EDIT: I guess I should say, the name of our short film is Coffee Man.

Yeah but I always feel a little let down (after several viewings) of how comparitively short the 'Nam section of the movie is, and how it doesn't compare to the Boot Camp half.

Also, I can't believe Pvt Pyle is Orson Welles in Ed Wood! wtF?

Bah, I disagree. Sure the boot camp section is what people will always talk about, but I don't think the second half shows much if any drop in quality. I find the soldier interviews to be a real treat, and the climax shows the subtle metamorphosis of Private Joker's character. Vincent D'Onofrio(Private Pyle) is a heck of an actor.

Yep you nailed it, boot camp = excellant nam = sup par and kind of a let down for the film.

Yeah but at least the war part of the movie is actually "real". It's not all big explosions and Cary Elwes knife fights like in Saving Private Ryan, which is a fantastic movie, but it's way overblown. I like how it shows a guy who had one of the most mundane jobs.

Absolutely. We agree for the 500th time.

I've heard that WWII Veterans say that Saving Private Ryan is the most realistic representation of WWII that they've ever seen. This may have been before Band of Brothers, but the D-Day part was absolute insanity, and very realistic, if the part about defending the city might have been a little overdone. I don't really think so, though.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the second half for the reasons you mentioned, but I still always feel as though its over too quickly.

Also, I've never quite got the "transformation" in Joker's character people talk about. I mean *SPOILERS* when he shoots the sniper at the end it was a mercy killing, yet people say it showed how the Marines turn young men into soulless killing machines. I don't buy that since he agonised over it for ages and eventually did it to finish her off quickly.

Of course the move from 'cynical smartass' to 'cynical shellshocked guy' is obvious, but hardly a revolutionary concept.

Films watched during the last two weeks:

- Loufa kai parallagh 2: Gorgones sto aigaio
: This is a greek comedy with a bunch or young guys serving their military service and doing crazy stuff on an small island. It's quite fun but watch it only if you know greek and a bit of english & turkish.

- Colour Me Kubrick: A True...ish Story
: An interesting movie which was mildly funny and entertaining. Great acting by Malkovich but the story drags a bit at some points.

- Dogville
: Very interesting and deep movie which is presented as a theatrical play and is played entirely on a stage. The whole movie takes place in the town of Dogville where the few inhabitants of the town have to accept a stranger in their lives. Excellent acting by Nicole Kidman (Grace), Paul Bellany (Tom), John Hurt (the narrator) and the rest of the cast.

You gave a well-reasoned response. I bought the "transformation", but I see your point. I doubt that I'd put FMJ in Kubrick's top 5.

Yeah but the Thin Red Line owns both of these movies, easily. Come on, when they finally storm that hill and the Japanese are all fucking crazy. Or when Nick Nolte and the Captain are fighting on the phone. Then Red Line is the BEST war movie ever I think.
