So this settles it, Fedor = most overrated fighter ever.

I really wanted him in the UFC, but he can die in obscurity now.

First, sorry for the novel, but I am a diehard MMA fan, and especially a Fedor fan. I have been around since the Pride days watching him fight. While I can understand you may be upset that he's not in the UFC, you need to think about what you're saying and maybe re-educate yourself by watching all of Fedor's fights.

What fights are there for him in the UFC? While I'm bitter he's not in there, and think a fighter of his caliber belongs in the UFC, for the status and recognition of the legend that he is... But he still has a 3 fight deal with M-1, that he's part owner of, that he has to fulfill. Maybe after that there's a possibility of the UFC picking him up. The UFC would not co-promote with M-1, Strikeforce will. That's about all there was to it, if you're interested there's plenty of articles on the subject.

But lets break down what the UFC has to offer Fedor

Maybe Brock Lesnar, Shane Carwin, or even Cain Velasquez are any real sort of threat to Fedor. Even so, these men are mostly wrestlers at heart, and would easily be submitted by Fedor who can seemingly find a win whenever he sees fit. Shane Carwin I think would have more of a punchers chance, but I do not see Brock having any advantage at all in the stand up, in the clinch, or even if Fedor is on his back. Fedor is not Frank Mir.

Speaking of Frank Mir, he eats it real bad on the bottom, and Fedor is a master of top control and doing damage from the top. Then there's Randy Couture... A legend in all regards, but what can he offer Fedor at this time? Maybe Randy/Fedor 5 years ago would have made some sense, but not now. Who's left after that? Noguiera? Cro Cop? Gonzaga?

In Strikeforce he'll have some decent opponents. Allistair Overeem has been on a tear since his move to heavyweight, and even has a KO victory over K-1 knockout artist Badr Hari, in a K-1 fight. He's looking very impressive, and is Strikeforce's current heavyweight champion. Bret Rodgers is an impressive up and coming striker who just KO'd Arlovski, and hasn't lost any of his fights, and there's Fabricio Werdum, and possibly even Bobby Lashley at some point in the future.

There's really an equal talent pool either way. It may not be as exciting as an MMA fan, but really, there's relevant fights for Fedor outside of the UFC.

Am I bitter he's not in the UFC? Hell yes. But in no way is Fedor overrated. He is stuck with his business with M-1, and the UFC will not meet their demands. One can only hope that one day Fedor is free of M-1, and can fight in the UFC.

You gotta stop listening to big UFC voice guy during event preview commercials.

Maybe you should educate yourself, too. The UFC met every demand there was except one, and that one demand was to give M-1 a 50% share in the UFC. What kind of fucking moronic businessman would EVER do any such thing?

The reason Fedor is not in the UFC is for one simple reason: he's a puppet. Talent aside, he's a fucking stupid puppet, and the UFC should tell him to fuck off next time his manager tries to negotiate anything.

No shit. I posted that in my last post. The logistics of Fedor's deal with the UFC has been over the net for about a week now.

I pretty much live, eat, and breathe MMA. It's one of my favorite things in life. If a story has broken out, in regards to anything MMA, from the UFC to DREAM, chances are I know the details. The UFC offered Fedor a great deal, they would even let him compete in combat sambo again, which I was surprised by, but his manager and owner of M-1 wanted co-promotion, period.

I like how this entire post kind of talked down to me like I have no clue. You and I roughly the same age and I have been into MMA for a long time to. Now unfortunaetly for me, in Canada, we did not get any Pride events on tv. I also had a shit internet connection, so watching them online was not an option. But now I have the Fight Network and good internet connection, so I have been watching a lot of old Pride fights. Mostly Fedor, and I never once said that Fedor was no good or he sucked, I am just saying that a guy who fights once or twice a year can not continued to be called the best in the world. I agree with you that he could probably tear up the UFC heavyweight class, and I would love to see him put Brock in his place. But the UFC is the top of the food chain in the MMA world, and him and M-1 were stubborn (so was UFC) in negotiating this contract. Now Fedor will go to Strikeforce and fight once or twice a year, as usual, probably win and continue to be glorified beyond all belief. I like the man, but if he wants to be the best (UFC heavyweight champ) he should of taken the 6 fight $30 million deal the UFC offered him and come in and prove it.

As for Silva, the UFC commercial voice is not the only place I've heard people say he is one of the best fighters in the world. I'm sure his record stands for itself. He's only got 4 losses, 1 of which is a DQ. I like Forrest Griffin, but watching what Silva has done to Dan Henderson, Rich Franklin twice, James Irvin, Chris Leben, etc.. he has proven he is the real deal. His last 2 fights sucked, yes, but just like Fedor, you can't hold those against him.

Silva is one of the best, that's pretty widely acknowledged; he actually looks bored when he fights.
But, that being said, we'll see how he does in the LHW class; as far as I know he's only fought once in this division, which in some ways gives Griffin an edge.

My $0.02 on Fedor; he's a phenomonal fighter but you can't really call yourself the best if you don't fight the best and UFC is the top drawer in this sport.
Until then, he'll be a paper champion.

It might of been real old UFC. Do you remember any of the names?

It's not about the money for them. I'm too lazy to dig up any articles, but you can do some hunting about M-1 and the recent talks with the UFC. I think they're just interested in trying to grow the Russian based company as large as they can, and Fedor is proud to be a part of that since he is a huge supporter of his own country, the man has even wined and dined with Putin many times...

What's really funny/odd to me is, wouldn't M-1 get far more notoriety having their logo on Fedor's shorts and in his corner than they will co-promoting a second rate MMA company on Showtime? Hell, if he fought Lesnar, you know they'd do one of those pre-fight diary shows on Spike, and Fedor's camp could plaster M-1 all over his video shoots. I'm not a businessman, but the M-1 brass don't seem to have thought this through very well.

Silva is miles better than Leben. Leben is a joke, and that was Silvas first fight in the UFC. So that is porbably why it seemed so mismatched.

If that's how you feel, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to come off that way. I was just confused as to why you'd say Fedor was overrated, and stated that maybe you should run back through his fights. I swear and shit all the time, and generally am pretty blunt... So I guess a lot of people take me the wrong way. My apologies, my good man. Just trying to have a discussion.

As for breaking down the UFC/Strikeforce thing... I just wanted to give out my thoughts on Fedor being in Strikeforce.

High profile champions or fighters in the sport tend to do that. You can look to GSP and Penn, among other big names that only fight a couple times a year. Anderson Silva fights 3 times a year, Fedor has been fighting 2 fights a year or more, except in 2008, when his career was in the air. He'll have another fight before the year is out.

It's M-1's fault entirely IMO. Also, as you can read by what I broke down, there is about equal comp in Strikeforce for Fedor at this point. Naturally, the UFC HW division is going to become even deeper as time goes on and they develop the division, but at this time, it's not TERRIBLE that Fedor is in Strikeforce, and a future in the UFC is possible if he parts with M-1 after 3 fights.

There was no 6 fight, 30 million dollar deal. That was a rumor, and has since been disproved.

I don't really think Fedor has anything to prove, his record shows enough, but if he does want to keep fighting I'd like it to be relevant and interesting... Strikeforce has a couple interesting opponents, but I would like to see him in the UFC. I just don't think he has anything left to prove, IMO.

Quote:

Prior to the UFC he was pretty hit and miss, even in victory. And as soon as fighters get over the mental game that Silva seems to prevent, he will be beaten. I'd take Dan Henderson in a rematch any day. Any strong wrestler I think would give him a hard time, they just need to work their way in past his strikes and not let Silva get comfortable.

Forrest has heart, and that's about it. I don't think that'll be enough to pull a V.

Anyway, I am not talking down to you, just having a discussion. Please don't take it any other way, brosef.

He has beaten the best. Look at his record and talent he has fought, the guys are no slouches and have great records of their own.

Please refer to my last post in regards to the UFC's heavyweight talent. What is there to prove against those guys?

Seriously... Paper champion? What the fuck.

I'm going to save more coments about Fedor for later...

But for Silva...

I have seen a lot of his old fights where he is pretty hit and miss. Where he gets himself into situations that a good fighter shouldn't be in. But, he always seems to get out of them. Like that one fight where he is on his back taking some shots, looked like he may get TKOed, he moves his right leg into position, kicks up, and knocks the guy out. Silva is the master of surprise. Henderson had him down, out wreslted him, and Silva took his back and choked him out. You have to be lucky to be good, and you have to be good to be lucky. Anderson Silva is both.

It's easy to say that now, but coming in, people thought that Leben probably would have KO'd Silva or at least had a good chance at winning. The world wasn't exposed to Silva, outside of the more hardcore fight fans...

Leben is a gamer, but he was truly outclassed in that fight as Anderson showed he had far more crisp striking. I think it was a good lesson for Leben, who generally just likes to brawl and do anything to get a KO.

I wouldn't say going into the fight that it was a mismatch, but afterwards we could see that Silva was on another level.

@Walnut... True. I guess I just don't like Anderson Silva. For whatever reason I just don't feel that his opponents have ever gone in there without fear... I think Henderson will win a rematch. He was dominating the first round, and let Silva get his game working in the second... Which was something Dan didn't want to happen, but he let it happen, and even admitted he didn't follow his gameplan after the match.

Oh I know Leben is a good fighter, watched that season he was on TUF aswell. I just don't like him, at all. Plus, wasn't he on steriods then? I want to see how he fights after his ban, I'm sure he'll come in all pissed off and look for the big knockout win.

I was really hoping he'd get past Bisping, but he played exactly into Bisping's game which was a joke. It's a shame about the roids, but you know what, I think a lot more fighters roid than people want to think. They just cycle them properly to get them out in time, and sometimes they get caught.

You have your picks for the weekend, Wal? I'm probably gonna write mine up tomorrow. Still stuck on a couple fights. >_>

I think I've got my picks for this weekend, but then I look them over and I don't know.

I think BJ will beat Florian, but I'd like to see KenFlo get the win and the title.

I think Silva will take Forrest. Forrest will do what Franklin did, put the pressure on Silva and get caught in the clinch and eat some knees to the face. But I know Forrest can take a beating, and has some nasty leg kicks. I could see this fight going either way, but I put my money on Silva.

as for the other main card fights, I just don't know yet.

I want to pick Kendall Grove, even though I don't really like him. But I don't know if putting my money on him is the smartest thing to do.

Josh Neer and Kurt Pellegrino I am at a stand still. Honestly have no clue.

Same goes with the others.

My thoughts exactly. Who knows what the Russian's were thinking. I'd imagine they'd get way more exposure since the UFC was going to let Fedor wear whatever he wanted, and let M-1 promote whatever they wanted on their banner, among other things.

They're just crazy russians, man.

Naturally, the UFC HW division is going to become even deeper as time goes on and they develop the division, but at this time, it's not TERRIBLE that Fedor is in Strikeforce, and a future in the UFC is possible if he parts with M-1 after 3 fights.

As for Silva, the UFC commercial voice is not the only place I've heard people say he is one of the best fighters in the world. I'm sure his record stands for itself. He's only got 4 losses, 1 of which is a DQ.

I like Forrest Griffin, but watching what Silva has done to Dan Henderson, Rich Franklin twice, James Irvin, Chris Leben, etc.. he has proven he is the real deal. His last 2 fights sucked, yes, but just like Fedor, you can't hold those against him.

Forrest has heart, and that's about it. I don't think that'll be enough to pull a V.

Anyway, I am not talking down to you, just having a discussion. Please don't take it any other way, brosef.

My $0.02 on Fedor; he's a phenomonal fighter but you can't really call yourself the best if you don't fight the best and UFC is the top drawer in this sport.
Until then, he'll be a paper champion.

He has beaten the best. Look at his record and talent he has fought, the guys are no slouches and have great records of their own.

Please refer to my last post in regards to the UFC's heavyweight talent. What is there to prove against those guys?

Seriously... Paper champion? What the fuck.

I'm not saying that he has fought nothing but bums, but plenty of those guys he DID fight would not last in the UFC.
Nog, Coleman, Cro Cop, etc, yeah those guys are fucking killers, but honestly, how many of those same guys do you think can stop Lesnar? He doesn't look even slightly winded after a fight, and Mir is no creampuff. Carwin is a monster, too, and is a world class wrestler and has good striking... Velasquez, Cro Cop, Nog, Gonzaga...their are a few that have the potential to break Fedor's run, no man is unbeatable.
like I said, the creme-de-la-creme is in the UFC, and until he steps in and takes down the UFC HW champion, he will be a paper champion, in my book. Agree or disagree, that's how I see it.

Mostly I'm just pissed that he pussed out of what would have been one helluva matchup, depending on who wins the Carwin/Velasquez and /or Lesnar. Lesnar is only going to get better, and like him or not, he's no pushover.
Instead, Fedor will continue to fight, like DW said, a few worthy opponents and a lot of nobodys.

What a dick. I hope KenFlo destroys him now.

Can anybody say sore loser?

Yeah, but BJ's known for that kind of shit.
I really can't decide on the pick for that one... the Neer / Pellegrino fight, though... I remember how Nate Diaz choked out Pellegriino.
On the other hand, Neer also lost to Diaz by decision... it should be a pretty good fight, but if it turns into a ground fight (which it will), then I'm going with Pellegrino. Neer is tough, though.

On Lesnar: what he should do is get some BJJ traing (flexibilty may be an issue, though maybe not, he is extremely quick and agile for his size) and work on his stand up.
The more I think about it, the more potential I see in the dude, given the proper training.
