It has DRM, no? Three installs and that's it, or something.

I bet a piracy copy could be installed and used in infinite. So even if you have bought the game that's always an option.

No, it's installed and all, but when launching the game it presents me with a white screen after the intro movie.

The two games I'm most looking forward to are Portal 2 and HL2: Episode 3. And of course Black Mesa Source. Half-Life 2 came out 5 years ago and still going strong :dio:
Oh, and Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 obviously. And Mass Effect 2. And a whole bunch of other games I've forgot.

When I was making that list, I did forget a few games. Plus I was only doing console games. As I am not much of a computer gameing person.

If I were to do a real look at everything comin gin 2009, my list would be much bigger. Those games I put down are the leaders of my pack.

well, afaik the Final Fantasy archetype was established way before it was possible to make RPGs where you could change the story in a significant way.

The first ones might have been great for their time, I can't really say. But it kind of makes it even worse thinking back. How many games are there now? A million? And it was only recently they got rid of the random encounters and from what I remember still no conversation choices or the likes. Good ole' FF.

FFXII changed quite a bit of the old formula now that I think about it. The way things are going I might even like FFXVII or something :)

srsly, though, there are a lot of games you can't change the outcomes to. Even if you can get a different ending, you only do so by fulfilling a few shallow criteria, so that's a dumb thing to complain about.

And you can't expect big action from a Final Fantasy game, because that's not what you play it for. If you want big action, play Tekken or something, which I could say is "utterly bollocks" as well, because all you do is memorize useless combos and mash buttons. And the random encounters can be a bit annoying, but they're a neccesary evil. How else are you gonna level up? There's nothing god awful about that.

I can play through them because I love them. Like I said, it's not at all about big action, it's a lot more about a gripping story, likeable characters, and that "epic sense" than anything. I just get wrapped up in them more than most other games I've played. So far I've beat I, II, VII, IX, and X, and I'm working on IV, VI, and VIII... I've got V and III... so I can play through pretty much all of them... at least all the ones I want to.

Also, Nobuo Uematsu is amazing. He's a bona fide musical hero of mine.

Woah now, comparing between different genres is perhaps a whole other (and huge) discussion :)

Played Mass Effect? Knights of the Old Republic and the sequel? You can change the outcome somewhat, get into a role by playing differently and actually leading conversations, have an impression on your followers by choice, plus the action is great in Mass Effect while being rather ok in Knights, but it can be both real time and paused during the action which makes for some more free gameplay. And the enemies are all there, not spawned in front of you every ten seconds.

This is how I imagine roleplaying games to be, although there's always lots of room for expansion. I figure I could say the same thing about Planescape Torment, Fallout and Baldur's Gate although I've played them way too little.
Maybe it's just my opinion on Japanese RPG's in general but they mostly feel inferior in some ways. They are too light on the "role"-playing aspects and lacking in gameplay.
All I'm saying is that the things I usually appreciate in games (in general actually) are seldom seen in a FF game and it's hard to see what people really love about them.

EDIT: Um, what thread is this?... Where am I? Thought this was the Now Gaming thread

Mass Effect is a great game, but there's really not as much freedom as you think. The dialogues almost always lead to the same conclusion no matter what you say, and nothing you do really changes the outcome that drastically.

I can't change your mind about Final Fantasy, so I won't even really try. I can see why people might not like them, but they're some of my favorite games ever. They're just not for everyone, I guess.

I'd say Madworld and The Conduit have a decent chance. I really want The Conduit to be good.

Madworld I am not sold on yet, I'll wait for reviews. But The Conduit is tops on my list for Wii games. I also hope it is good.

Hehe :) Hell, I got that as an avatar and still don't take it all too serious. His opinions are forcefully negative as always, though highly entertaining.

True. It is possible to read through the lines with Yahtzee, though, and I got put off by the description of it as much as anything.

I love Yahtzee, but I do not go to him for trustworthy reviews or to decide which games to buy. He's good for the hilariousness and that's that.

Best survival horror I've played since Cold Fear. Only downside is that it's really short (which survival horror ain't) and I found it a bit easy even on the harder difficulties. RE4 was also good but I can't really call it a horror game.

Have you seen the animated prequel ? Wasn't really good though the story and gore held it together. I also heard of a live action movie in the works. :)

I played RE4 on the Wii and was mighty impressed. RE5 is looking exactly the same but in higher resolutions and and different setting, not sure what to think really. Though co-op would be awesome.

Your point might be valid if the stories from the early Final Fantasy stories weren't amazingly cheesy...or at the very least, not gripping. Granted, the earliest FF I've played is FFVII but even that game's story was not enough to make playing it the least bit fun. Same goes for Chrono Trigger, although I suppose that might be fun on a portable console a la Pokemon.

Advanced to the semi-finals in the playoffs. Now I tangle with Buffalo, who has been a tough team for me to beat all seasonn.

EDIT - up 2 games to none already.
