So... the consoles aren't any good?

Yes they are.
Upgrading your Pc to play games is also a good idea and while it could be more expensive than a console a good PC has so many other uses than just gaming, my gripe with pc gaming is that because developers cant take into consideration what kind of hardware or software you have installed games tend to be more buggy then there is this constant feeling that if you have better equipment the game could look better or play more stable and the risk of buying a game and to be unplayable on your computer.
Ps3 fanboys will tell you that the XBox360 is only good for shooters and online gaming but that is simply not true and while those are definitely its strong points the 360 also has an amazing catalogue of great games from all different genres so if the 360 is your choice youre gonna have a lot of fun with that system, but while Xbox live is an excellent service is also not free and most of its exclusives are also available for PC.
X360 fanboys will tell you that the PS3 has no good games and that is also a lie, true at first the PS3 had very little games but right now is kicking ass with its impressive list of exclusive tittles such as Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance 1 an 2, Killzone 2, Valkyria Chronicles, Uncharted, little big planet etc, and its only getting stronger also most games are multiplataform so youre hardly missing anything with that system plus if you have a good HD tv you can experience most games on full 1080p hd, Playstation network is not as robust as Xbox live but it works, it has no lag and most important is free, plus you get one of the best blu-ray players on the market and all versions come with a hard drive the downside is that is more expensive than the 360 but if you ask me its well worth it.
About the Wii, well the Wii is a different beast, it is a good console but its a different kind of console or more well put "is console for a different kind of gamer", if you go with the wii youre gonna miss on most of the great games out there so you can forget about Call of Duty, Metal Gear Solid, Fallout 3, Gears of War etc, so what do you get? well you get some really fun games that although more "casual" they are also fairly original but with that you also get alot of crappy games that exploit the gimmick that is the wii-mote (Wii music anyone?) the whole concept of the console is that everyone can play it and because of that i feel that hardcore gamers that bought the console were dissapointed with it but if you take it for what it is you will find lots of fun in it, also is way cheaper than a PS3 or an Xbox360.
