Seriously, athletes in North America are such little cry babies.
The professional athletes in Australian leagues make a tiny fraction of what North American athletes make, and when I say tiny fraction, I mean our HIGHEST paid athletes make a tiny fraction.
And you know what? We have never had a lock-out in any of our major leagues. Because Australians stop crying over bullshit and get on with it!
You'd have to compare the revenues generated by Aussie Leagues with the revenues generated by the NHL, to be fair. There's no point in discussing slice sizes of a "small" cake. Whereas the NHL cake seems fat and tasty (slightly above 3.2 billion dollars it seems).
That said, I'm not defending them. When I think about Scott Gomez making 7 million per season, I feel the urge to bathe in my own vomit.
You'd be surprised. The television rights deal done for the AFL (the aussie rules league) which is our biggest, most popular league, last year was worth 1.25 *billion*. That's before you even take into account attendance, which on average isabout 40,000 people per game. During finals footy the average is above 70,000 per game. We're talking about a huge, rich as fuck league. A multi billion dollar league.
But because the league has extremely strict hard salary caps, the absolute cream of the crop, player wise, make 1 million a year. And that is only reserved for really elite players, probably less than 10 guys. An extremely good player, outside of the elite, might make $500,000 - $800,000 a year. Journeymen players might only make $200,000 and rookies even less.
Yes, when the 1.25 billion tv deal was announced there was a lot of negotiation between the players union and the league, and a lot of delays, but something as extreme as a lock out would
never even be considered.
