Hence Libya and Syria have quickly become failed states and Egypt is on its way. Yemen is borderline. Iraq is a fiction too. Lebanon has been effectively a failed state since the late 1970s.

Remove the monarchist dictatorships from the Gulf states and you'd probably have even worse chaos especially with Shias in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain able to promote their own goals of independence.

The thing people don't get about Arabs is that their countries are artificial constructs that resulted from colonial carve ups and as such they have no true loyalty to it.

Whatever the case, why are NATO troops fighting Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, Yemen and then providing air support for them over Libya and now apparently planning to do so over Syria? The jihadist only gain in those sort of thing - just like they did in Libya (which in turn influenced events in Mali in favour of Islamism).

And why is the US and co so intent on destroying the little credibility the UN has?

I saw APC's built out of civilian trucks in Croatia - literally steel plates bolted on. Croats painted there's but they still looked like a retarded box on wheels.




Also in WWII, Russian forces surrouded in Odessa built "Terror Tanks" - literally a civilian tracked tractor with armour and guns.



Best one was the Kiwi Bob Semple tank - again a tractor with corrugated iron "armour" and a gunner lying on a mattress.

In light of the Connecticut business, I'm now curious: how do gun rights advocates here feel about restricting the access to assault rifles? Earlier in this thread, I had sought to argue against the second amendment as seeking to establish a militia and since militias take other forms than me and my neighbor owning guns in this day and age then hence the second amendment really has to become simply about one's right to own guns as such for protection from intruders, not invading powers.

The question becomes is an assault rifle necessary for home defense or hunting? Unless Sons of Anarchy is realistic and I'm missing shootouts with ARs and MPs out in the streets of Oakland in my nightly news.

Another issue that has come up is the cracking down on access to ammo. If ammo became restricted, as in sold only at ranges or limited in relation to hunting in the same way deer tags are limited per year, what would be the argument against that. If you're gun in your home is for personal defense then you shouldn't need but ten rounds a year. If you can't hit a single animal with ten rounds then maybe you need to purchase more rounds at a range. And if you do get an animal and go to apply for another tag then you should be given access to more ammo. Kinda like a prescription to be written by the state official. Does this seem like total bullshit, I'm kinda rolling off the cuff with it?

I really don't see how protecting your home with an assault rifle is necessary. Surely a handgun/shotgun would be more accurate? Tried to keep nose out of gun rights argument, anyway. Used to be very pro-control, less sure now. Wouldn't want them legalised in Britain, though...
