What, re 'sharia'? The guy quoted in the piece uses it, don't see the issue? And it's a bit much, considering the way left-wingers would kick off if a senior member of, say, the Conservatives had a rape covered up by the party. SWP always have been pretty disgusting, but this is beyond the pale.

China, you're doing modern punishment wrong. Spectacles are the past, surveillance is now. I like how the crisis of morality that capitalism/postmodernism has opened up leads towards this weird atavism where surveillance no longer works because the internalization of authority is being undermined as the order of things seems to be fracturing and so through the cracks you have a resurfacing of seemingly anachronistic, Draconian forms of control.

The past few weeks I've been working with a professor on their book about sex offense laws in America. With those, you have the intense form of surveillance through registering, but you also have the old style dungeon, 'lock 'em up, throw away the key' through banning sex offenders from living in certain areas. The old form of banishment and the creation of a pariah class comes back alongside the new technological forms of knowledge, everyone having access to databases of who has committed what crimes, where they live, a quantified value of their possibility for recidivism. It's wild and wacky stuff.
