Rant about football commentary
It fucking sucks in Britain. I hate it. Basically you have two types of commentary to watch out for- good team commentary and bad team commentary.
Bad team commentary
When an "underdog" team is playing, the commentator will open by pointing out that this is a capable team, and deserve respect instead of being patronised. He will then proceed to patronise them throughout the course of the match. He will never once criticise their performance. If they fuck up he will simply say "Well, that was a brave attempt, they don't want to be beaten here- look how hard they are trying". He will then be astonished when that team does anything right at all. If they make a rudimentary headed clearance, he will behave as if he has just witnessed an act of unimaginable heroism. He will also ignore any negative qualities that team has. Case in point: 89 minutes into T&T's game against Sweden one of their defenders goes down, and is treated for 2 minutes for an injury. Then he gets up and carries on. For any other team that would be criticised as diving and time wasting. For T&T, he's a heroic soldier battling on.
I'm not criticising T&T. They qualfied for a World Cup finals, and as such they deserve not to be patronised, and they deserve to be criticised in exactly the same way as everyone else. Incidentally, this underdog rule does not apply to Australia or the USA. Only poor countries.
Good team commentary
Commentary in matches involving good teams are slavishly sycophantic. If Riquelme or Ronaldinho dribbles round a man, or makes a back heel, the UK commentator will behave as if he has just seen him change into superman and intercept a nuclear bomb. If the good team in question is Argentina this will be followed by a reference to Maradonna. If it's Brazil, probably by a reference to "the Samba".
End rant... What is the commentary like in your country?
I've been watching the games on Univision 23 (A local spanish channel), and the commentators are always biased to whatever country they are from. For example, today's commentary was two mexicans, and of course, the Mexicans would prefer Ivory Coast to beat Argentina, so they kept saying how spectacular Ivory Coast's moves were and how close they came to greatness (Despite a crappy performance from the Ivory Coast, and a horrible performance from Argentina the second half).
