Dunno if anyone reads magazines here, but is there a Canadian equivalent of Harper's/The New Yorker? (ie magazine of political and cultural commentary for smart people)

This seems like the ticket. Gonna buy a copy of it and Maclean's, see if either one catches my eye.

I got the references to Wittgenstein and The Rite of Spring in Pynchon's V, so yeah I do :-)

Oh, you've read Pynchon? Goodness, well then, I'm sure everyone is suitably impressed at your pedigree.

You know, I've found in my experience on this forum that almost all of the people who post here are rather intelligent individuals. Most of them, however, do not feel the need to go around advertising it.

It only serves to make you seem insecure.

(I was also kidding, kinda. By smart I meant the most cliche of university educated, theatre rather than movies, literature rather than TV. tennis rather than baseball, etc definition.)

Tennis rather than baseball

As a huge tennis fan, I'm not entirely sure I see the intellectual value of the game.

Anyway, if you were kidding I withdraw my criticism.

A guy unstuck in time. It's a comedic novel that follows a guy who wakes up in different points of his life, important sections of his life involve being in the fire bombing of Dresden during WWII, being a dental hygienist, and being abducted by aliens and put on display in a zoo with a porn star. It's hilarious with a pretty cool sci-fi vibe to it. Very easy reading and it's only like 200 pages long.

took a break on the Saramago, The Prestige was cool but the movie was better.

reads a lot like a novel i guess. something like parts of Bonfire of the Vanities if it were a corporate finance/corporate governance case study.

for the shop. probably won't read the whole thing, but really have to carefully read the parts on Portugal and Italy, and to a lesser extent Chile and Argentina. quite interesting if you're into this stuff.

For the reviews. Probably won't read the whole thing, but really have to carefully read the synonyms for "cheesy", "utter crap", and "god awful motherfucking nonsense".

Those first two have cool pictures on their covers. (Third one isn't working.)

Third one is a lame cover anyways. The first book's art is Andy Warhol's Diamond Dust Shoes and the second is Diego Rivera's Man at the Crossroads. I wish the guy in the middle of the Rivera was Homer Simpson.
