Is it fiction? Historical?

I'm 161 pages into Angels & Demons by Dan Brown, it's about time I read what all the hype is about. Da Vinci Code is next. So far this book is pretty good, interesting.

Angels and Demons is far better, despite the pro-Catholicism rubbish. I like 'em, people expect too much...

Guy Gavriel Kay writes fantasy, and damn good fantasy at that. I haven't read that one, but The Lions of Al-Rassan was a great book and I really reccomend it.

Angels & Demons is indeed a great book. The Da Vinci Code is also pretty damn good. I'm interested to see how the movie will be. I don't think Tom Hanks fits the role at all, but we shall see.

Audrey Thingy should redeem it...

Fiction historical-fantasy. I recommended it to you in this very thread. :)

It's fantasy with strong historical leanings. For example, the writer refers to the Vikings as Erlings and the Celtic as the Cyngeal. Christianity is referred to as Jad, and the Norse god Odin is referred to as Ingavin (blood eagles are present). In addition to creating his own world based on these cultures, he throws in a few mythological creatures such as fairies to create the fantasy element. It's absolutely not one of those LOTR rip offs, so if you're looking for something a little different you might want to give this book a chance. It's certainly been getting a lot of postive reviews.

It seems many people think that The Lions of Al-Rassan is one of his best novels. I'll have to check that one out.

Because he's a hack with a penchant for accidentally-controversial dimestore pap novels that stick around the bestseller charts for much longer than they have any business to. I could cut off a finger for every interesting sentence he's ever written in his life and still have enough fingers left to do simple addition without counting in my head.

i admit i read 3 of brown's books (i don't know how many he has total) - da vinci, angels and deception point, in that order.

it was fun while it lasted but i saw with DP the whole "brown formula".. after i realized it, his stuff didn't seem interesting at all. so, here's the formula:
-people with jobs like "religious symbologist", "glaciologist", "gister" and"marine geologist"
-main character + secondary character of the opposite sex = love
-the person behind it all ends up being the one the character relied on the most to help him out, save for the secondary character.

You have a point, but he's good in creating controversy. Even though I kept saying to myself "Oh, this is bullshit" he still managed to keep me coming back and finishing the book. (Da Vinci)

Yeah, that is true. I've read all his books.

+17. Brown is a nice, mindless, pageturning writer, but all these claims of the Da Vinci Code being a masterpiece and whatnot...

If the only way to create lasting controversy is to write books that rival Dean Koontz at his worst in terms of total inanity and are as paint-by-numbers as Tom Clancy, then fuck creating lasting controversy.

I wish he would just die in a fire or something.

Has anyone ever read the Gor series by John Norman? the series is 25
books (although 2 new ones are on the way)? The Gor saga is by far my favorite set of books that I've read. Although his philosophy that women should be slaves to men, has made the author quite controversial and gets a bit bothersome at times.

Below are the books I've read so far in the series:

Tarnsman of Gor - Ballantine - 1966
Outlaw of Gor - Ballantine - 1967
Priest-Kings of Gor - Ballantine - 1968
Nomads of Gor - Ballantine - 1969
Assassin of Gor - Ballantine - 1970
Raiders of Gor - Ballantine - 1971
Captive of Gor - Ballantine - 1972
Hunters of Gor - Daw - 1974
Marauders of Gor - Daw - 1975
Tribesmen of Gor - Daw - 1976
Slave Girl of Gor - Daw - 1977
Beasts of Gor - Daw - 1978
Explorers of Gor - Daw - 1979

The series ran from 1969 to 1988, but a new book was published in 2002 and another on the way. If you like science fiction/fantasy read the first book Tarnsmen of Gor.

Sounds like something Manowar fans might enjoy.
