Don't put the serial killers in the same hat with mass murderers. Totally different types of perpetrators, different drives, different causes, different methods, everything. Hard to say which one is worst. Serial killers are more sinister though.

I can understand where you're coming from, but essentially what I was trying to convey - Mass murderers or serial killers - there's a back story, a drive, a motive. Doesn't matter how technical you want to be about the differences, they're still people who kill shit loads of others! When whatever back story, drive or motive comes to light, someone out there will take that, turn it into a story, shoot a film and make bucks from it.

I don't think a movie on a mass murderer like this kid or anyone else would sell well compared to a movie based on serial killers. There wouldn't be much plot in it. Movie start, kid gets fired, girl dumps him, kid goes on a killing spree, guns himself, cops find suicide note. Worst movie of the decade I guess. Unless the film makers can get whole of his diary or autobiography, then maybe they can capture his emotions and personality that led to the shootout.

On the other hand, movies on serial killers are pretty great.

It could be a good film with a decent actor. Can't be that hard to imagine what the guy was thinking.

Haha, I'd came to this topic intending to post exactly this. :D I guess that's the reason why there're plenty of movies about serial killers and none (to my knowledge) about mass murderers.

One can make a movie about a serial killer without glorifing him. This is definitely the only acceptable way to do it. Out of the movies you mentioned, I've only seen Zodiac and I found no trace of glorifying. There are 3 movies about Dahmer. I didn't see any, but I read that the first one, The Secret Life: Jeffrey Dahmer (1993) is quite good (for a low budget film), true to the events. The second one, Dahmer (2002) seems to downplay the severity of his crimes. I have no info on the last one, Raising Jeffrey Dahmer (2006).
