I think we're part of a dying breed. Those who buy CDs, ;)

It's kind of like an addiction (worst addiction ever, admittedly). I just habitually pick up CDs for £4-5 in the second hand shop and add them to the racks. Sometimes I don't get round to listening to them for months at a time. I just get the "hey, they're meant to be quite good!" or "that's a band I should probably listen to" or "hey, that's a cool album cover!" voice in my head.

Yeah, itøs sad but true. We're a bunch of old men doing old men's stuff.

I love to find something in the piles that I haven't listened to in a long time or perhaps never gave enough attention. It's like finding hidden treasure. I would never have those experiences if I just downloaded and quick-consumed so that makes it all worth it. Besides I like the whole 'ritual' of putting on the record and listening to it (even better when I have to turn the record as with LPs or cassettes) instead of just double-clicking on some song. It makes a coherent experience and I don't have to listen to the 128kbps compression. Also most of the bands that I really like don't sell that many records so I don't begrudge them the sale or the money spent on a good record that people have spent their time and effort on. Good honest music deserves it.

OooH! Guess whos gonna see Blasphemy, Horna, Archgoat, Revenge, Taake and some other good bands next weekend?!?! Hahaaa!!!

Lucky bastard! That's going to be a great show! I thought about going to the nwn fest. That's probably going to be pretty badass as well, but not quite as good a line-up even though there's a few overlaps (Proclamation and Revenge).

I used to just download everything i listened too but I have now started to buy CD's as well, mainly because i want to support good music and because it's fun to have a real collection and going through the booklets, not just having a bunch of mp3s stored on your hard drive. I also think that having a bunch of CD's on a shelf looks really good for some reason, it becomes a part of the furnishing.

However, I am not saying that downloading is bad. If i hadnt downloaded the CD's that i buy i would never had bought them in the first place.

I tend to only buy CD's when i can get them cheap. It is just not worth it when they cost something like 20$ because i can do better stuff with that money, particularly when I have the option of downloading the album in a few secods for free.

To answer the topic: I sort the CD's mainly just by putting albums by the same band together, no particular alphabetical order.

I used to buy CD's (was brainwashed by you guys :P) but I don't anymore, except for very rare occasions, like when there's extra content (Crack the Skye) or like with Live at the House of Blues where 15% of the proceeds went to charity. The thing about CD's is that for me, they don't really have that collector's item status yet...so it's kinda pointless to buy them because the "coolness" factor doesn't really do it. I would really like to start up a vinyl collection but it's so expensive to get a setup together. Plus I know nothing about it so I'd have to do a good amount of research before I went out and bought something. So yeah.

I really cant understand this, for me very few things are better than music, i mean 20 bucks for countless of hours of musical pleasure its practically a steal.

Yeah this is true, its harder to buy an album when you know you could get it for free, that doesnt mean its not worth it though.

If I were rich i wouldnt hesitate to go and buy all the new albums I wanted to hear when they came out, but like someone said earlier in this thread, If I went out and bought all the stuff I really wanted to hear i wouldnt be able to afford anything else.

In my defense I don't download that much anymore.. I mainly use spotify to discover new music and if i really like something i sometimes download the album and load it into my iPod  but if i can get a copy at a reasonable price I will buy it!

I am willing to pay for music, because i love music and I want to contribute to the people that create it, but I think CD's in general are overpriced. If there was a general lowering of the prices I would stop downloading altogether.

Everyone has his/her priorities with money. Personally mine is having food every day and be able to have a drink with my friends once in a while. Not so easy when your budget is 35€ a week  I wish I could buy all the CD's I want but now I have to save a month for one. Judge me, see if I care

I totallly understand this, look im not judging anyone, like you said everyone has his/her priorities with money, but i believe the reason that buying music is not one of the top priorities its because we can get it for free not because it isnt worth it, if downloading eneded today an all our mp3s got deleted im pretty sure we'd all be saving more money to buy albums.

I organise my cds in alphabetical and chronological order as well. I used to store them all in cd towers, but that just got annoying and inconvenient. Right now I use those tall skinny Ikea shelf thingies. Works alright, though I think I'd prefer the longer shelves.

Aye, but the skinny Ikea thingies are a complete pain in the ass when
you buy a CD that start's with A.

My shelves are almost full now. Going on a bit of a shopping spree
today I think, and after that, I'm screwed. Gotto find a solution!

That's true!
Good thing downloading made something great happen. Anyone even the lowest form of life on earth with a mere connection can get a musical education. And there is no buying albums if you first don't have an education.

True dat. If it wasn't for illegal filesharing I wouldn't own half the CDs in my collection. It's all about moderation, folks.

I never used to buy CDs, but there's just somthing about having a physical price of music in your hands... And I believe in supporting the bands I listen to. If I listened to pop or Country, I doubt I would care enough to go and buy the CD especially considering that many of those artists are making more money than Ill ever hope to see. But for the underground bands I listen to, it's the least I can do to buy an album.

Yeah, join the club!

Between my CD collection (400+) and my DVD collection (600+) I have the whole spare room lined in bullshit, hehe.

Alphabetically, of course!

I agree they can be annoying, but I currently live in a very small apartment so they're all I can ideally use at the moment without drilling holes in the walls (which I'm not able to do here).

Most have been sold to the local record store, but before that I lost my entire 400+ collection because the cases and artwork were all stolen. The discs sat around in stacks until they were pretty unplayable. I gave up and threw them all out at one point.

But what a lot of people said, in storage because I have everything on an external HDD. At least I was a little bit prepared for this because I was backing everything up since 2000. I didn't back up everything, but nothing was irreplaceable either.

I keep them in the large soft cases with 4 slots per page. I'm up to about 100 now so I still have plenty of room to store additional records.
