idk you seem to use everything to come to the conclusion that black people are terrible which seems pretty racist to me. And your first post in this thread was an attack on their culture without even an attempt to make it relevant to the thread's content, which is also suspicious.

As usual, noodles, you react from emotion.
Where did I say black people were terrible?
I said they need to take responsibilty for their fate.
I said that black culture, in it's present form, is what is keeping them down.
I stated that those things need to be looked at and changed if they want to succeed in life.
That is not racist. You see, peole like you are cowards; you're afraid to tell the truth lest you get labeled the dreaded "R" word. Bill Cosby has said the exact same things I have, yet, I am a racist.
You're really not very bright, are you?
A piece of advice, and this is in earnest: stick to worrying about whether or not you will be able to fit into the latest pair of "got-to-have" skinny jeans, leave this stuff to men.

Hard to argue with some points, but I do think that 1 family in 4 is not "very few", it is a lot, especially taking economic considerations into view. Four million slaves = more than the current population of the city of Los Angeles. I'm not saying that slavery is your fault as a white man, but it was more widespread than you're making out there.

That was 1:4 in the South.
The numbers say less than 5% of the total white population of the US at the time.
Point is, all the race / slavery huckstering that is going on is overplayed and isn't really benefitting anyone.

oh ok I guess I'd agree with that. I'm thinking we mainly disagree about the causes of it and methods of attacking the problem.

Hmmm, well, alright then.

Case in point: take any black that is educated and successful (outside of hip-hop and sports) and 95% of them behave in a manner that is conducive to success; now these people are labelled "Oreos" and mocked and derided by the rest of the black community that choose to "keep it real".
That is what I mean by taking a hard look down that long corridor and deciding what one wants from life.
I can't, nor can anyone else, do it for them. Hence my first line about leading a horse to water.

That's probably because behaving in a manner that is conducive to success involves conforming to the norms of a culture that has been mean to black people for a very long time. Not trying to blame white people, but it's not like their aversion to our culture is completely irrational.

Whatever.
First off, that assumes that all whites were evil racists; not every white person thought that the way the South treated blacks was good. Many, I would say most, but really I don't know, I am only going on my own personal experience, thought it was reprehensible. in fact, the biggest racists I have ever encountered happen to be non-whites.
Second, be that as it may, it is time for the black community as a whole to smarten up. The current situation is not an auspicious one. Two choices exist: continue with the same formula, or try one that has proven to be successful.
Third, I leave this quote for you and whoever else ventures into this thread to ponder:

“The willingness to accept responsibility for one's own life is the source from which self-respect springs.”

- Joan Didion

I'm not really saying anything about nowadays white people, just that in the not too distance past they were segregated and otherwise were not looked upon particularly favourably, which created a cultural divide which still exists today. I don't think blaming people is a useful way of addressing the problem.

Yeah, Jim Crow was disgraceful, no disagreement here.
No sense in beating a dead horse, though.

Another thing; very few whites were slave owners:

Quote:
Approximately one Southern family in four held slaves prior to war. According to the 1860 United States Census, about 385,000 individuals[208] (i.e. 1.4% of White Americans in the country, or 4.8% of southern whites) owned one or more slaves.[209][210] and the slave population in the United States stood at four million.

Yet, for some reason, we all (even those of us whose ancestors arrived long after slavery was outlawed) are indicted and held accountable. This is wrong.
But doesn't our society reap the benefits of slavery? I'm not really putting this out their as sound because much of America's success actually came post-slavery. Hmm I wonder. I'll probably be lambasted for this and I won't defend it.

Well yeah I wasn't even thinking of colonialism, more just in reference to American enslaving of Africans in the 19th century.

There was this guy way back in slavery times who wrote this book about how slavery was destroying the economy of the south. The dude was a pretty radical racist, but it was still a good argument against slavery. I wish I could remember his name...

Not true. Like Legacy mentioned, even most of the people who opposed slavery did so on the grounds that it undermined free labor, not that it was reprehensible.

And slavery has been practiced in many other places, and there people all over the world who are still disadvantaged because of discrimination.

And even though I think discrimination is responsible for the negative aspects of black culture today, I wouldn't even say that this is the main factor. It's because of the past discrimination that a large percentage of the black population is growing up in shitty neighborhoods, attending shitty inner-city schools that are shitty because they are funded by the property taxes of the district, with little to no access to proper healthcare. How are they supposed to make it out of a situation like that? The fact is, it's not their fault...I'm not necessarily in favor of affirmative action for college and job admission, but the cycle of poverty needs to be broken through improvements in education and healthcare from the start.

Blacks don't have a monopoly on poverty.
Excuses, excuses and more excuses... how's that working out, by the way?

No, they don't. That's why I believe in helping the poor, not helping blacks...although at the same time, helping the poor disproportionately helps blacks, which I think is a good thing considering how they've been wronged in the past.

And lol. I don't make excuses for myself, because I've been handed everything on a silver fucking platter.

I wouldn't venture as to saying that race itself makes one predestined for intelligence, or stupidity. However, blacks are not doing anything drastic to improve their condition. They seem to still blame whites for keeping them down. Their children grow up wanting to be LeBron James, not Albert Einstein, and it seems that the disproportionate amount of crime committed by them are a direct result of their impoverished numbers and influence of their music and their ideas. It is truly disappointing. The most racist people I have seen are blacks, specifically in politics or the ministry. Go to Youtube and look up Jeremiah Wright, and you will see that following a man like that will ensure that they never progress to societal success. I don't mean to sound racist or anything, but as a resident of South Florida, ask any cop, lawyer, or judge, and they will tell you at least half of the gang crime is Haitian. We need not throw money and food at them, instead, ensure that their children are given an emphasis on education. They may need to learn the hard way.

Totally agreed, except that I know more racist white people than racist black people, so your anecdotal evidence there is totally proven wrong! And exactly how many white kids do you know that want to grow up to be Einstein, then?

*insert loooooooooong list of crazy white men here, and write about how people that listen to them are totally mentalist*

To use a personal example, it's interesting that a significant percentage of criminals in this country are Scottish. Truly disappointing. It's only because they get food thrown at them. And money. We should teach their children about stuff, that'll improve them and stop them wanting to grow up like Gordon Brown.
