I am certainly more in favour of letting bars decide their smoking policies, as opposed to the government. If anti-smoking feeling is so strong, then the bars that chose not to ban would quickly join the ones that did. So effectively the market would do the governments job for it.

I kind of do feel sorry for smokers. It's an addiction that many peple need just to relax, so effectively we're saying that people suffering from this addiction can no longer relax in pubs. (Surely the entire point of those establishments). Pubs were not built to be healthy places. I have never smoked, and even have a history of respiratory problems, but even so having smokers around doesn't really bother me. Maybe that says more about me being a wierdo than anything else... :oops:

I have many non smoker friends and here's what we do when we go to a place, smokers sit at one side of the table and try to blow the smoke away, non smokers sit a little far. It's a very easy solution, they aren't bothered because there is no smoke, everybody is happy. This can work in bars, smoking and non smoking sections can be the answer, banning it altogether is fascism. (well, it isn't, but it's just as bad)

Calling it facisim or an infringment of rights is just scaremongering.

People aren't allowed to be naked in public, people aren't allowed to drink in the streets (at least in Glasgow we're not), you can't drink or smoke until a certain age, you can't play unreasonably loud music after a certain hour - these are all measures of control that have been in place for years that people accept as reasonable, but as soon as it comes to your nicotine fix its a different matter.

All this responses would have been different if somebody dared to ban drinking alcohol, I'm not killing anybody from second hand smoking, alcohol is just as bad as cigarettes for your own health, but if somebody banned it would be a violation of personal rights for all of you. This is hypocrisy.

Because none of that stuff bothers me really. So what if people did run around naked? It would be gross, but so what? I accept no methods of control as reasonable. The Governing bodies of the world sell nothing but lies, lies I refuse to buy. Why can't the bar owner make the decision for themselves? If that was the case I would accept it, but since it's Governments doing this shit I won't accept it. It becomes more and more clear that there really is no such thing as freedom in the world, in part because people are so willing to let Government control their lives. People are starving to death in your own hometown, yet you are fine with your Government wasting time with this shit?

My town left it up to the Bar Owner, a measure I voted for. Now you have a choice, don't smoke, don't go to the smoking bars. Simple as that. Out and out banning is retarded, and will only wind up costing you the taxpayer money.

What a thorough argument, care to explain how it is bullshit? Drinking and smoking can both be extremely harmful, it's a well documented fact. Getting rid of one but not the other because of "health" is hypocrisy.



No, it is in fact an infringment of rights. While we are not living in an Orwellian nightmare just yet, it starts with tiny steps like these.



Of course, if it came your drinking fix you would be just as angry.

I was wondering because my grandmother is from there and my dad was born there. I wouldn't mind visiting it someday.
