To change the subject a little, is there a reason that these guys haven't made more of a mark as a non-extremist alternative to the Tea Party?

Because they're not as sexy as Palin.

I remember learning about the old Whig party, but that was in... 7th grade? And the teacher didn't go into much detail on their politics, us being dumb kids and all. Will have to do some research.

Just to go back to what Orion was saying about liberals, can we please all understand what the word actually means, the classical and European meaning of the word as opposed to this American idea that it means anyone on the big-government left:

http://vimeo.com/3762059

Liberals are not socialists, not into big government, not into protectionism, not into 'hating' the people that they represent. Liberals are neither left nor right wing. It's about the economic and social rights of the individual, his freedoms, his liberties. The founding fathers would be liberals were they alive today.

I was using the term as it is used in the American political scene.

About the Whigs. I think Frigid is actually pretty spot on. They don't have the big personalities yet.

I know, but it's wrong. Never fails to make political debate with Americans confusing and painful when I say 'I'm a liberal' and then proceed to talk about liberty and attack government interference in daily life.

I hope the Whigs get somewhere. America is crying out for a decent third party.

Just stumbled over this horrible article on a couple of Christian schoolgirls beheaded by muslims for walking to school. I'm not politically active on the subject, but the picture touched a sore spot I guess.

Very NSFW, that picture.

Not that it isn't terrible, but this is a five year old story.

How did you stumble upon a right-wing anti-muslim site?

This is amusing in a bittersweet kind of way.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2 ... ate-change

The 10-10 environmentalist group got Notting Hill/Love, Actually/etc director Richard Curtis to make a short film, and well, it's on YouTube here. Intended as a jokey lol-aren't-we-amusing-type thing, it's been pulled after the realisation that some may find the idea of being murdered for not believing in the 'cause' rather offensive.

Now, as someone who actually does believe that global warming is man-made, I weep that I'm aligned with these idiotic frigging morons who are given lots of money for this kind of nonsense. This may already have wrecked the entire campaign, except that a lot of governments are already signed up. Utter stupidity, enough to make me question their worth as a charity if that's where the money goes. Especially disappointed with Scully.

It's the 40th anniversary of Che Guevara's death. Interesting take-down from Johann Hari: http://tinyurl.com/382jtcw

It links to a pro-Che piece at the bottom by George Galloway that is full of  and  in equal measure.

I've talked to two. People really appreciate someone actually being concerned about their people rather than the size of their wallet.

Figured as much. It's as if there can a plurality of opinions to a single situation. Go figure.

Vast wage inequality as a bad thing? Go figure.
