Eh. The whole thing seemed to be a showcase for two fairly unfunny comedians and a bunch of people eager to show that their signs and slogans are better than another bunch of peoples' signs and slogans. They may have been, but it doesn't really restore sanity to A Mary Queen politics, does it?

Not by a long shot. I find it rather amusing that the left think of themselves as this seperate entity and not part of the same corrupt paradigm that has raped and plundered this country for decades.
Until a third party is recognized and given equal time, this country will continue to get fucked from both sides (unless you are rich, of course).

The people at it were clearly American-style liberals though. It was 'we're lefties, and look at how clever we are to think of these signs' rather than a genuine moderate, sensible, centrist movement rejecting partisan two-party politics, as V said. I doubt the whole thing wouldn't have happened if the Tea Party didn't have a bit of a silly public image - you get the feeling the protesters were more about declaring themselves non-silly and making ohsoclever ironic internet jokes rather than actually making an argument in favour of immigration or taxes or whatever. I saw interviews with the participants, they barely even knew if there were elections in their districts. Plus the 9/11 truthers were there, so guess what? Both sides have their morons. 9/11 truthers and ignorant hipster twats holding ironic signs are just as mockable as birthers and old ignorant twats holding passionate badly-spelt signs.

No doubt Trapt/rio will be along to rage in a minute about how the left in America is reduced to mocking the seriousness of politics under the leadership of a pair of tv clowns. Hard to disagree, wherever on the political spectrum you come from.

What's sad is that the most objective and intelligent political commentators and pundits in the US have shows on Comedy Central.

Anyways, I don't agree at all with this criticism of the Stewart/Colbert rally. Having a group come out strongly against the Tea Party is a good thing, no matter how much you dislike hipsters and ironic signs. The fact that the Democrats couldn't get their stuff together enough to do something like this themselves, or even grow a pair and come out to call the Tea Party the monstrosity that it is, is really depressing, but for fuck's sake, don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

The rally was to make fun of extremist political views, not arguing about taxes or immigration, so I don't see why you'd expect that. I agree it was mostly liberals but that's not surprising since Daily Show and Colbert's audience is primarily liberal.

A rally to make fun of extremist political views, with 9/11 truthers. Great job! And if it's making fun of political views, then surely it naturally should argue the opposite of said views? Otherwise, if all you can do is call people stupid without explaining why, it's rather useless...

I can't say I am sorry to see the Democrats clobbered tonight (Hillary should be president, not Obama)--then again, there is plenty of lunatic fringe on the right that now will have more clout too. In my state contest for US Senate, Pat Toomey was elected...a man who has stated that businesses should simply not be taxed. Sheer lunacy. Where is the third party? This system is broken.

Watching the coverage, I must say I've never been so glad that I'm not an American. We Brits complain a lot about our system, yet the choice you guys have is beyond pathetic.

The Republicans plan to gridlock the system with a series of subpoenas that will do nothing more than circle the wagons for whatever reasons. It's as if their major goals subsist of nothing more than corporate tax breaks, repealing the health care overhaul, and genuinely doing nothing other than that. ...............

Well, that and cutting government spending back. If Rand Paul genuinely does succeed in having military spending slashed, then good for him.

I fail to see how tax breaks for the top two percent of income earners results in a lessening of spending. This is the same party that championed two wars, and an impending one with Iran, they're not going to "reduce" spending at all... Paul supports deregulation which is not something I see helping the economic situation at all.

All I'm going by is what I'd heard from Paul so far - if he can actually cause some major infighting in the Republicans and drag them in a different direction, so much the better. Then again, Obama might suddenly grow a pair and tackle the deficit. Then again, all politicians are scum, and I'm glad that woman who is Not A Witch didn't get in.
