Robert Jordan - The Shadow Rising
I was already busy with this one, the fourt in the Wheel of Time series, when I read A Game of Thrones, and now it suddenly lost all its allure! I think I will finish this one and then its bye-bye Jordan.
Alas, compared to Martin, Jordan just doesn't quite cut it anymore. Still, The Shadow Rising is a very good book; unfortunately, the Wheel of Time reaches a point around book 8 where it really, really starts sucking.
Looks like you know your fantasy. What can you recommend in the line of Martin that's also good?
Although Martin is my absoloute favourite and you should really read all there is of A Song of Ice and Fire first, I really reccomend R. Scott Bakker's trilogy, The Prince of Nothing (the first book is called The Darkness That Comes Before). You'll especially enjoy it if you like philosophy. Also of interest is Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series. The first book (Gardens of the Moon) is pretty hard to get into (for various reasons; its a hell of a complex world and Erikson doesn't explain anything for a while which is kind of refreshing, but the writing isn't up to par with the writing in the rest of the books in the series). Its very high magic, very powerful characters type of fantasy, which I normally hate, but Erikson is gritty and writes incredible battle scenes. Finally (for now), I also reccomend C.S. Fridman's The Coldfire Trilogy. Not completely stellar plotwise, but incredible with characterization and character development, a very interesting world and magic system, and really, one of the coolest characters in fiction ever. Those three should do you well.
