You are kidding me? IMDB is the biggest collection of retards this side of the official Slipknot forum.

Really?
Well, I still most of the time agree with the ratings and opinions on the site... Guess that makes me one of them!

Read the forums... awful, awful people. Quite apart from the top ten movies:

1. 9.1 The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
2. 9.1 The Godfather (1972)
3. 9.0 The Godfather: Part II (1974)
4. 8.9 Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo. (1966)
5. 8.9 Pulp Fiction (1994)
6. 8.9 Schindler's List (1993)
7. 8.8 12 Angry Men (1957)
8. 8.8 The Dark Knight (2008)
9. 8.8 One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
10. 8.8 Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

The Shawshank Redemption at number 1. Schindler's List, The Dark Knight and Star Wars making the top ten. Just... no.

Well, I guess you are right for the top ten part. Never got the hype around Shawshank Redemption, such a mediocre movie.
Then, what's the best site to get to know new movies? Other than IMBD i use RYM but nothing else.

The trouble is there isn't really a better site for info on films. For reviews I look everywhere, two examples being Roger Ebert's site and Ruthless (chiefly for fun, but they review the less big films as well, and if they say a film is good it generally is).

Eh, I can appreciate some of his stuff.

Jackie Brown, Pulp Fiction - Yay
Reservoir Dogs - Yay, but overrated
Kill Bill 1 - Great if drunk, otherwise...
Kill Bill 2, Death Proof - Awful

I think that's all of them. Can't remember if he did True Romance or not, if he did that can go in with JB and PF.

He wrote True Romance, didn't sit behind the camera.
I agree about Tarantino; over- rated one hit wonder.
Violence and profanity for their own sake is not "art".

The only ones that belong on that list are The Godfather, The Godather II and The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly.
Shawshank Redemption was manipulative pap, and didn't do Kings shory story justice. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's nest was good, but in the top ten?

Which brings me to a subject I find somehow annoying: when a book is or was a bestseller in it's own right years before it was made into a movie, is re-published at the time of it becoming a "MAJOR MOTION PICTURE" with pictures from the movie splashed across it's cover and the book title co-headlining with the movie title.
Lame.

I agree with all of that except for Star Wars. And none of my three actual favorite movies are up there, but all of those movies are absolutely fantastic. People's tastes in movies here are weird...what would you have?

I agree. I wouldn't put any of those in my list of favourites. But I can see how those films are on the top ten when there are so many thousands of people voting.

Also, I don't understand what people have against IMDb. There are idiots on every forum, that doesn't make the site worse. It usually makes the forums more fun. I almost always check IMDb before I watch a film and have done so for years. I very rarely watch bad films. It's all about knowing what to look for in reviews.

I look at rottentomatoes and imdb for movie ratings. Usually one of the two is right. It's definitely not the same as my top 10, but all the movies I've seen from the imdb top 10 have been awesome, and I can't think of any movies I love that have had crappy ratings. I haven't seen Shawshank or Schindler's List though.

Why? After seeing the movie some people will want to read the book.

Erm, I hate being asked this... top ten films. Close Encounters, Godfather, Godfather II, Chinatown, are all I can think of offhand, and in no particular order.

Yeah, but at least on most other sites the normal posters outweigh the retards. Not at IMDB!

IMDB top 250 is on and off pretty darn solid, all top ten are fantastic and Death Proof is wonderful. You guys don't like films or something?

yeah, I realize that. I think it bugs me because of the celebrity / Hollywood worship that permeates so much of American culture, I mean it is everywhere. Plus, it's probably snobbery on my part.

Ya, nothing wrong with the IMDB top 250. There's no use bitching that (gasp!) their top ten doesn't match yours, or that this movie should be in there instead of this one. Chances are, if you choose a movie at random from that list, it'll at least be good.

The Dark Knight is not better than One Flew Over, let alone all the films it's beaten. Most overrated film of recent years - good, but not that damn good. And Death Proof was absolute shite.

Hails COTB! Chinatown is a truly excellent piece of film-making, not to mention the fantastic plot...

It is.
I understand that movies and such are subjective, but, but top ten's shouldn't be. There are certain undeniable facets that should define those that belong in that category, and those that do not, regardless of how much a movie is liked. For instance, Scarface is one of my favorite movies, but to list it as a top ten would be misguided at best. On the other hand, whether or not one liked the Godafther movies, they absolutely belong in that list, and at the top portion of it. How can anyone not watch Godfather II and not have their breath taken away? Beautifully done, top notch acting and a great story; not many films can re-create an era so flawlessly and believably as Coppola did with that one. In my opinion, it even exceeds the original, which is a classic in it's own right, obviously.
Same with The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly. Timeless and true, art for the sake of art.

You ever watch any film noir?
My all time favorite genre.

Film Noir isn't something I'm that familiar with, although I do have Kiss Me Deadly on my DVD shelf awaiting my attentions.

The more I look at the top list, the more I hate it. Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King at thirteen? The Matrix above Dr Strangelove? Se7en and District 9 above Apocalypse Now and Taxi Driver? Terminator 2 and The Departed don't belong anywhere on that list, nor does Sin City and Braveheart. God, what a shite list that is.

Edit: fuck off, Batman Begins above Blade Runner? Changeling above Network? Jesus Christ.
