The comments are unbelievable. "I wonder how some of my friends of Scottish origin feel about being stereotyped like this!" Well, if they've got anything Scottish left in them, they'll laugh at you for being pathetic.

Good read, Fridge. I assume she has considered some other hyphenated American "white stereotyping" like the perfidious Italian mobster (true, btw) or the vagrant Irish drunk (true again!); at least those groups still identify as Irish or Italian in America today. As for Scottish Americans, I think we largely fall under the rubric of WASPs in the sense that our ethnic identity was lost long ago. A few people in my family are into their old country roots I guess, but I only cared to hear when digging discovered Norwegian family ties.

Thanks to their work in informing me, I know my family name belongs to the Campbell clan, but I was always more interested why we changed our name upon moving from Canada to Boston to sound more Irish (as the Irish were the power in the city at the time). The history of hyphenated-American name changing, I think, would be a fascinating read.

Actually aphra_benn, about 8 posts down makes an interesting post noting the difference between the Scottish and Scottish-American experience and the notion of romantic tartarism. I'm not sure I agree with any of this, but makes for an interesting read.

It's funny because the author, for all her wailing about injustice and oppression, actually stereotypes the Scots herself with this bost, and it's the most harmful and negative one of all- the "too wee, too stupid to do anything for yourselves". Yes, Brave is such a terrible abuse of Scottish culture that we needed an American who's obviously NEVER been to Scotland to come point it out. Assuming we need to be defended is insulting, actually, not any of this red hair stuff or kilts with naked balls underneath (which does happen quite often). We'll damn well take care of ourselves, thank you very much.

If it's true that Scottish-American identity doesn't exist anymore, then she had damn well be sure she's spent a lot of time in Scotland herself to say these things, otherwise it's just patronising neo-colonial bullshit.

Seeing that Scots don't measure nationality by bloodline or ethnic lineage but by civic participation, the question is entirely irrelevant to the discussion at hand.

Absolutely 0% "Scottish" blood. I probably have quite a lot of Pictish and Celtic blood from my Grandmother's side, the ethnicities that made up Scotland in antiquity, but that doesn't prevent me from being a "Scotsman". What makes me a Scot is the fact that I live in Scotland, work in Scotland, pay taxes in Scotland, study in Scotland, participate in Scottish politics, participate in Scottish society, interact with Scottish culture and am able to represent it accurately to visitors or foreigners. Not some ridiculous, archaic concept of "bloodlines" determining national property.
