What makes a philosophy student a productive/potentially productive member of society?

Perhaps you took the question too far, but I'll still answer.

Many people do not understand what philosophy is. It is not simply wondering about things aimlessly. Philosophy is the study of logic, reason, and reality....

I know, i was just fucking around.

Many people do not understand what philosophy is. It is not simply wondering about things aimlessly. Philosophy is the study of logic, reason, and reality. Philosophy majors can generally reason better than any others (which is probably why they score higher on the LSAT).

This is a skill relevant to many jobs, from business (which roughly 30% of philosophy graduates go into) to PR jobs, to whatever.

The ability to be be logical, and to to articulate your ideas well is a useful ability indeed.

On a related note, it never ceases to amaze me how condescending certain math/science/engineering people can be to people not in their fields.

I get that a lot at my study, people there generally think anything involving creativity (in a non scientific way) is shit, while I might even pitty not having chosen something like that.

I just don't see why people have to shit on each other for choosing a different career path. I have tremendous respect for engineering students and the work they put in, and I think everyone understands the value they have for society. On the average engineers are in a much more demanding field than liberal arts students, but that doesn't mean that all or even most liberal arts students are slackers/don't contribute anything to society.

You know what, I think art and philosophy might even be more important than engeneering these days. Ok, technical progress might be needed to maintain a rich status in the world, as we still are highly dependant on other nations, but technical progression has been ongoing for thousands of year already. While spiritual progression has halted more or less for that same period. I do think that a technical mind is an analytical one, which comes in handy regarding philosophical issues, but the focus needs to be on both. I would trade my car for the existance of music, you know.

Nothing's more important than learning about the ancient Greeks and Romans, though. Yep, the jobs are just going to be piling up for me.

Really, debating "this field is more useful than this field" is retarded. Its not a competition; you should be doing something you like.

Philosophy was the beginning of all science. 'Nuff said.

That's another viewpoint. Mine is that philosophy came first, and science followed - philosophy being the idea to find out the truth of things, and science being the ability to accurately describe it.

Well, science is made up from two ingredients, the theorem, and the application. The application might have been there first: Fire, the wheel, crafting tools, etc. So theories, in basic form, must have been formed immediately thereafter. Philosophy, however, might have been there as well, depending on how consecive you are regarding the dept of the word.

I'm a high school student, but I'm pretty smart so I'm hoping to get into a good college. I'll probably end up majoring in math or science, since those are two of my strengths, but I'm also really good at English so who knows...

Ha, don't feel bad, I end up doing the same thing except it is to study data and trends in measurments to determine problems. I use JUMP a lot too for data analysis. Is the geeky part of my job. I would rather just fix stuff.

Right now, I'm a programming/software-engineering intern at a small computer company. I've finished all my undergrad courses, and will graduate once this internship's complete. I also study Computer Science (although I'm actually a Mathematics major) and am looking at several places for Graduate School, such as Carnegie Melon and the University Of Pennsylvania.

Math is a good subject to major in. Believe it or not, a lot of math majors actually tend to do better in engineering than actual engineering majors.

i believe it.

a othe thing i have found to be an interesting thing, is all of the conservatory classicaly trained pianists i have talked to that are big metal fans, all like black metal instead of the "neo classical" prog rock, one might expect.

to counter the idea of the high rate of degress amongst the forum being linked to affluence, post IQ scores and compare to average.

I'm an English major/art minor at a highly neurotic women's college (redundant, I know). I'm in my last semester, and it is kicking my ass in new and exciting ways. I can't sleep (I keep waking up in the middle of the night for no discernable reason) and when I do, I apparently grind or clench my jaws.

Does anyone wanna give me a job in three months?

As for education, next fall I will be attending PSU for...as of now Information Technology. As for my income this moment...well that comes from Red Lobster.

I think we did a while ago. I'm at 140, and I think that most members here were at least 120+, well above average.

I'm finishing up High School this year and I plan on getting a degree in either Aerospace/Chemical/Materials/Mechanical Engineering, Biogenetics, Chemistry, Astronomy, or Meteorology. Truthfully, all of those appeal to me. As for what University I'll be attending, hopefully MIT which I hear back from on March 31st, but thus far CalTech is where I'm headed.

You must got great GTA scores. the MIT, cool man!
