Well, I just recently re-discovered my love for Comic Books, so most of my time, effort, and money has been spent in that general direction in the past few months. I've also been spending most of my "E-Time", which I also have less of these days, on the Comic Book Resources site finding out what those fine people think about the medium and what's worth reading. I'm going to the Black Metal shop this evening though, I'll probably stop in and give my thoughts on my purchases later. I still stop by at least once a day and see what's going on though, I haven't forgotten you guys, I just found a new toy for the moment.

I have to say though, everyone patting each other on the back for liking Band X doesn't really leave much room for discussion. Discourse is generally what fuels dicussion on any forum I go to, and if you think Metalheads are bad, they don't have anything on the rabid Comic Book fanboys that are out there. Those people will have heated arguments over realism in a realm of fictional characters in Spandex suits!

Yeah I dont really think you can really have much of a musical discussion if everyone likes a band since there's not really anywhere for it to, beyond recommending similar bands, which annoys Ken too :P

Threadjacking is far different than discussion similar bands. I'm all for discussion. Someone can sit on the complete opposite side of the fence—I don't care. It's all about a flowing musical discussion. Simply dropping a link to another band is kind of retarded.

And what exactly is the point of discussing why you like a band or why not?

It's true: strictly in terms of utility there is more value in simply namedropping similar bands and linking to their myspace than there is in actual discussion. Because technically you get something quantitative (is that the right word?) out of it- ie the knowledge of what a new band sounds like- rather than something nebulous and valueless like other people's opinions opinions.

But Noodles actually had a point with his Camel.

Yeah, my unequivocal love for Opeth has definately toned down over the years. I still listen to them from time to time for shits and giggles, but I definately don't take them as seriously as I did before.

But is it impossible to discuss this new band you're just dropping in the laps of other people?

Frankly, I'm amazed that someone—especially a reviewer—could even question the point of discussing why one does or doesn't like a band. Yeah, yeah...the question isn't finished. It was a set-up question because he's so clever. The logic is flawed, however.

He does, but Opeth readily admit that Camel is quite an influence to them.

I wonder why I wrote opinions twice at the end of that sentence sentence.

I am presenting a hypothesis that I don't actually agree with myself. I think it is factually accurate, but not a helpful view to have. Plus I had been reading about marginal utility value and wanted to wedge it into helheim.

I'm afraid you missed the point. Recapitulating, the point there is no point. How can I have a point when I'm asking you a question? If you want a point, I think it's not less valuable to drop names of similar bands than to discuss why you like a band. I'm not saying either one of those is useless.

Then you have my apologies.

As for dropping names and links to other bands, I think if someone starts a thread about a certain band, you shouldn't just roll up and go "Check out this band!" and throw a link in there. It's the same as interrupting someone's conversation face to face. It's annoying. If you want to drop a link to a band you think is similar, why not discuss that band a little bit?

Yes, that would indeed be better, but I also think it's better to just drop a name than to do not.

Haven't quite come out of the closet about Korn yet though.
