Aldo out with a rib injury and Chad Mendes in against MacGregor for the Interim FW title at UFC 189. Sweet karma for Dana White and the UFC brass. They can already hear the sound of PPV buys dwindling anyway. Honestly this is the fight that should have happened anyway. MacGregor now has the opportunity to silence his critics against the elite wrestler Mendes. On a side note, we can safely say that White will never heavily market an Aldo title fight ever again.

Last night was spectacular. Prelims were a little hit or miss, particularly that Howard-Pendred bout, but that main card... Was super stoked when Pickett came out of the gates tearing Almeida up, but that fucking knee! Second fight was just decisive. Bermudez and Stephens was one of the better slugfests I've seen in recent years only to be capped off by another fucking knee Street Fighter style. Really impressed by Lawler to be able to hang in there, but also not surprised by Rory not being able to finish him off. Lawler seriously needed to stop talking there at the end, his lip was one of the nastier things I've seen since Silva's leg snapping. And that final fight, Sinead O'fucking Connor. How can you lose when Sinead O'Connor comes out and sings for you? And why is America's equivalent to Sinead O'Connor fucking Aaron Lewis? Did they blow all of their live music budget on Sinead O'Connor and couldn't afford anyone better? McGregor's takedown defense was decent, but he was a little sloppy in the tussle when trying to get it back to standing up, but generally impressed by the guy. I generally think of him as just a boxer, but the fact that he hung in there with Mendes on top of him despite those nasty nasty elbows. Seriously, I thought that when he won the fight that that was just the round ending and my heart sunk, afraid that Mendes was going to be able to right himself and get back in control. But McGregor's ability to push the fight when they were standing up was overall impressive and Mendes cardio seemed weak. I started thinking McGregor was the real deal when he just dismantled Siver and now really want to see him up against Frankie Edgar or Aldo. And love the shit talking at the end towards Aldo.

Haven't read a single bum review about this card. Excellent match-ups that delivered, spectacular finishes abounded and McGregor proved his mettle against a championship-caliber opponent. Chad's cardio was going to be a big factor in the fight and, from most accounts, didn't look in championship form. McGregor's stand-up looked impressive as expected pushing the pace on Mendes and wearing him down with his oh-so accurate boxing skills. Mendes was able to get McGregor to the floor several times and work elbows from the top opening a nasty gash on the Irishman. Cage-side spectator Frankie Edgar was clearly taking notes here. But give credit to a game McGregor for absorbing the punishment and staying focused as he took advantage of an ill-advised pass by Mendes and ended up finishing the fight by TKO. Even though Chad didn't have a full camp, this is still a high quality win for Connor who legitimized his position atop the pack of FW contenders. Aldo may be in even bigger trouble now than he was before as Connor's confidence should be sky high (as if it wasn't before.) The unification bout should be a fight to remember.

Faber and McGregor confirmed as coaches for the next season of TUF. Cue collective high fives from 'bros everywhere!

It will be interesting to see how well McGregor can actually transfer his unorthodox style to other fighters, if he can at all. My guess is Connor's fight team will be handling the lion's share of the actual training while he dips in and gives pointers when the camera is running. Faber, on the other hand, thrives in this sort of environment and has been coaching elite level MMA fighters for years. From a purely coaching standpoint, this has to be considered a massive mismatch between the two. But, we all know McGregor is mainly there just to talk shit and create more drama. The gym 'bros will eat it up, I promise you.

I really see no reason why you would bet against Rousey at this point. I got her, Rua, Bruno, Lopes, Struve, Silva. Hoping Struve can get back on track and start winning like he ought to.

Palhares stripped of WSOF WW belt and suspended indefinitely after another controversial submission victory this weekend over Jake Shields. RP was also remanded for his repeated eye pokes on Shields who posted pictures of the damage on his Instagram page. An outright ban by the NSAC should be forthcoming on RP who has been the poster child for dirty fighting over the past several years. Couldn't come to a nicer sociopath.

In other news, Arlovski vs Mir booked as the co-main at UFC 191 which features Mighty Mouse defending his belt against John Dodson. Both Arlovski and Mir have had a nice run of success lately and the victor should be in the conversation for a title bout against champion Fabricio Werdum.

At UFC 190: Rousey continues her dominance, Rua and Silva get back in the win column and Gadhela inches closer to a rematch with strawweight champ Joanna J.

Rousey to defend her title against former boxing champ Holly Holm at UFC 195. Some have been calling foul on the UFC's part for snubbing Tate after previously announcing her as the next opponent. This really shouldn't come as shock given her last two outings against the champ and with Holm going undefeated during her UFC tenure. Hoping Holm will be the one to finally give Rhonda a worthwhile challenge.

Tate isn't going anywhere, putting another win under belt prior to another rematch would work in both her and Rousey's favor. She still needs to develop a lot as a fighter in order to hang with Rousey.

Personally, I would have preferred a Holm-Tate match-up to decide the #1 contender for the belt. Miesha is a tough chick but, as you said, her game is not nearly polished enough to give Rhonda a real run for her money. On the other hand, Holm still has some bad habits carried over from her boxing years that would put her in serious trouble against a master grappler like RR. Honestly, either one of them will be a massive underdog against Rousey, but maybe Holm will surprise us. Not holding my breath though.

I could totally agree with that. Until Cyborg cuts weight, I foresee that the next two years will be this very thing repeated again and again. She's in a nascent sport and she is light years ahead of her competition. It will take a decade for the rest of the competition to catch up and by then she will have been retired for five years. I think a comparable situation is putting somebody kinda average nowadays like MacDonald or Hendricks in those early UFC competitions and they would have tore through their opponents like butter.

WSOF lightweight title contender and amputee Nick Newell announced his retirement after a UD victory at WSOF 24 this past Saturday. A testament to hard work and dogged determination, Newell proved time and again that physical limitations need not deter us from achieving our dreams. Hell of a guy. Hope his success continues.

A pleasant diversion from the continuing Rousey drama that has been dominating MMA news lately.

And New!!

Image

Hails and Horns :dio: to Holly Holm for a spectacular performance Saturday night that left the Aussie crowd stunned and Rousey in a heap on the mat. Many questions now lay ahead for the former champion chief among them the competency of her current trainer. Rhonda's stand-up looked positively amateurish compared to Holm who peppered her with that killer left jab throughout the entirety of the fight. Once Rousey found out she was in a war and that her "bull rush" strategy wasn't going to be good enough to beat Holly, she looked lost out there and received no meaningful help from her corner during the break. Once the second round started, it was just a matter of time before Holm put her away. The classless post-fight exit from Rhonda was especially disappointing given her supposed mental toughness the she constantly champions. Some serious soul searching will be in order.

Elsewhere, Joanna J. retains her title with a lop-sided unanimous decision against Valerie Letourneau, Mark Hunt KO's Bigfoot in their much anticipated rematch, Rosholt outwrestles Struve to a UD victory and the rise of Uriah Hall comes to a halt with a loss to Aussie Robert Whittaker.

Kind of glad Roussey lost. Hope Holm kicks her arse again in the inevitable rematch.

I'm not a Rousey hater, but this was a much needed wake-up call. Rhonda foolishly underestimated a veteran fighter with far superior striking skills and was deservedly embarrassed because of it. As I said, there needs to be some serious soul searching because this isn't going to be a quick fix for Rousey. She must re-evaluate her priorities if she is to continue in the sport because the competition is only going to get better from here. Her current coach Edmund Taverdyan and the Glendale crew needs to be dropped TODAY and all this extra-curricular shit must take a back seat if she is to fully progress as an MMA fighter. Holm will be prepared for their rematch, make no mistake. But will Rhonda?

Also, Mirko Cro Cop officially retires from MMA after suffering an injury setback in his upcoming fight against Anthony Hamilton. In spite of his disappointing stint with the UFC, Mirko closes out his career as one of the all-time great heavyweight fighters with hugely successful runs in Pride and K1. Epitaph: "Right leg, hospital. Left leg, cemetary."

Roussey made the same mistake Anderson Silva did when he lost the title. She didn't consider her opponent a threat and clearly was not prepared for the fight. Hopefully this lesson in humility will inspire Rhonda to become the fighter she's hyped up as being.

Got bored withe the same old patty cake bouts a while back, but it's always beautiful to see someone get a righteous beatdown after running their neck.

Both titles change hands at UFC 194 with Luke Rockhold dominating Chris Weidman over four rounds and Connor McGregor shocking the MMA world with a 13 second KO on long-time champ Jose Aldo. You have to wonder how much the mind games really affected the normally well-composed Aldo who led off with an overly aggressive charging right which McGregor timed perfectly with his slick left hook. A stunning finish on a shot that he called during the lead-up to the fight. I would have lost some money on that fight, boys. A few scenarios lay ahead for the Notorious One but I would say a title defense against #1 contender Frankie Edgar and then possibly a move up to LW if victorious, but who knows? An immediate rematch is not out of the question considering Aldo's impressive legacy in the division, but I would honestly prefer he fight Max Holloway before challenging McGregor again. For Rockhold, Yoel Romero waits in the wings after taking a very close decision victory that night against Jacare Souza. Other fights: Demian Maia schools Gunnar Nelson, Holloway decisions a game Jeremy Stephens and old man Faber gets it done against Frankie Saenz.

Rafael dos Anjos out and Nate Diaz in at UFC 196 against FW champ Connor McGregor. As usual, McGregor was at no loss for words regarding his upcoming opponent:

“I honestly like Nick’s little brother,” McGregor said. “How can you not like him? He’s like a little cholo from the hood. But at the same time, he coaches kid’s jiu-jitsu on a Sunday morning and goes on bike rides with the elderly. He makes gang signs with the right hand and balloon animals with the left hand. You’re a credit to the community.”

Good stuff from the Notorious one. Should be a fun little scrap between these two guys. Mystic Mac predicts a first round KO by left uppercut, by the way.
