Seriously though, you still need a lot of practice, especially when you try to tackle some of the harder songs.

Yeah, I can't even get time to practice anymore, maybe 2 days a week at best. I will mention that I don't have access to most of the production equipment necessary to make these sound as good as they could. All of them were done in one or two takes, so it's quite rough. The whole thing took around two hours to complete |

Thank you all, I'll try to rehearse more before recording in the future and take my time and do a lot more takes next time. Adding more of the backing track will definitely help disguise the shortcomings more as well. I've fixed the EQ as well where it sounds much better. Rolled off more of the high end. Will probably use a pop screen next time too. I think i am trying to get stuff recorded for the sake of having it recorded rather than going with a slower process and getting it right. I completely over-projected on some of this and didn't sing in a consistent manner volume wise on the quieter stuff. I need to work out the dynamic compression tool a lot more as well. I'm not taking this that seriously and just plan on practicing until i am 25 then going out and trying to get gigs. Need to go for quality over quantity before too many people hear half-assed underworked tracks like these in the future. Not many people will realize that when you record a song that you've only sang a handful of times that it doesn't mean it's been practiced to death and perfected and that you've been misguided into thinking it's really good. That's not the case here whatsoever and people will assume what they want and they will assume that it really is the best you can do even if it isn't. |

Here's an advice I give to anybody who tries to sing and is not very sattisfied with the result: Try to sing without listening to the music/mp3/CD while singing. If you can, sing along while playing an instrument like a guitar or piano. If you can not play, maybe ask a very patient friend of yours to help you with it. It might sound extremely basic but most people can't hit 3 notes in a row exactly or perfectly but they hardly realize this. Start with small segments and try to get it as good as you can again and again. Then, when you're confident enough, try to record yourself while playing that instrument and listen to yourself singing. Note mistakes, practice, try again, repeat all over. Take that song "the silent man" for example. It's not an extremely hard song to play if you want the very basic melody (remember, you're not practicing your guitar or piano skills but your singing). Play it as simply as you can while staying true on the melody and then try to sing along with it. If at some points you can't hit the right notes while singing under a longer chord, you can instead play the vocal melody and follow it with your voice. You will notice it is much harder than you originally thought. I'm not claiming to be a great singer. I know my limitations and I know my voice can't handle hard songs. But I've personally made great development in singing in tune and quite well just by singing while playing and paying great attention to my voice and how it matched every note. I hope that helps! |

I can actually sing guitar melodies a hell of a lot easier than singing, but yeah, I know about this trick but don't have a guitar right now but it is a good trick to learn if it is on key. Generally I synch the volumes up where I can't hear either myself or the original singer if it is on key, that works pretty well. My difficulty is that my voice sounds completely different through my inner ear (which is what we hear when we sing) than it shows up on tape (how it sounds going through your ear canal) so it's hard to gauge that the tone sounds irritating and hollow as opposed to strong and resonant. But yes to answer the post singing accapella is the best way to make sure you are singing the right way. Generally I use a guitar tuner to make sure I am hitting the notes exact, if it's within an 1/8th of a note I find that acceptable and hard for anyone to notice as being off key unless it is a long note, which I never have problems hitting. |

And on Adveser's singing, it would probably sound quite a bit better with some reverb. The sound was very dry, which brought out a lot of the imperfections in your voice. |
