Have they always had brown M&Ms? Buying a packet of the peanut ones today, I was rather perturbed to see they were all yellow and brown instead of the usual red and blue I remembered from the last time I bought a packet, which is a good few months back if not a year.

Heck, not that I mind the yellow ones, the packet itself's yellow, but brown? When'd that happen? What's the point of colouring it brown, since it's got chocolate inside? It's like putting red wine in red bottles, which I suppose has more of a point, but you really only see that with the trendier ones, the normal ones go for green bottles, which is much better. Besides, bottles are see-through but M&Ms aren't.

metalreviews.com: tackling the real issues.

I don't recall a brown M&M, but then I don't really eat many of them anyway so can't say for sure.

But hang on... didn't some rockstar (Ozzy?!) have a rider requesting M&M's "with the brown ones removed"? Or was that a different colour?

That was Van Halen, if I remember correctly. It was to make sure people read the contracts carefully. If they found a brown M&M, they'd trash the venue.

But not in such an amount, surely? Opening the packet, I thought I'd bought minstrels by accident!

In Wayne's World 2 the roadie says that Ozzy wanted a load of blue M&Ms, or all the blue ones removed. Eitherway, it's pretty much just a joke and urban legend.

Quote:
Forrest Mars, Sr., founder of the Mars Company, got the idea for the confection in the 1930s during the Spanish Civil War when he saw soldiers eating chocolate pellets with a hard shell surrounding the inside, preventing them from melting. Mars received a patent for his own process on March 3, 1941. Production began in 1941 in a factory located at 285 Badger Avenue in Clinton Hill, Newark, New Jersey. One M was for Forrest E. Mars Sr., and the other M was for Bruce Murrie, son of long-term Hershey president William F.R. Murrie.[3] Murrie had 20 percent interest in the product. The arrangement allowed the candies to be made with Hershey chocolate which had control of the rationed chocolate.[4] When operations were started, the hard-coated chocolates were made in seven different colors: Blue, Brown, Yellow, Orange, Red, Green and Violet. They were served in a cardboard tube (similar to Smarties).[5]

The practicality of the candies during World War II caused an increase in production and its factory moved to bigger quarters at 200 North 12th Street in Newark, New Jersey where they remained until 1958 when it moved to a bigger factory at Hackettstown, New Jersey. During the War the candies were exclusively sold to the military.[5]

In 1948 the cardboard packaging was replaced by the black cellophane packaging. In the same year Mars bought out Murrie's 20 percent stake

From Wiki.

I believe that your previous M&M experience was not cannon in the M&M universe i can assure you that brown ones have always been in the packets and in great amount too, IMO they are the best M&Ms of the bunch its like they are saying "look man im not gonna lie to you, i am made of chocolate" truly a breath of fresh air in this hipocritical society and they reminds us that we are all the same on the inside.
