Post subject:  Tattoo advice
In a few days I'll be going to get my first tattoo, on my tricep. I was considering getting a second, smaller one done at the same time, to save time and whatnot. The only problem is that while I know exactly what the second tattoo is to be, I can't figure out where it would look best. It's going to be a phrase from Robert Burns - "A Man's A Man For A' That". If anyone has any ideas about placement it would be much appreciated. And please, spare me snide comments if you're one of those people who thinks getting phrases is gay or something.

Btw, I'm avoiding my forearm, as it's not as easily concealable for work or whatnot.

Well, there goes my suggestion then. I've never completely understood why something like that would prevent someone from getting a tattoo on the forearm. I mean, on the one hand I do understand because there are people who make a problem out of it at job interviews/at work etc. On the other hand, it's a tattoo, a form of self-expression. Fuck what everyone else thinks about that.

Well, tattoos are to be seen by other people, true, but they're also for yourself as well, as a manifestation of something personal to you. In this case, Burns' poem is a beautiful statement of egalitarian values, enlightenment and liberty, something worth having on you even if it's not "in your face" all the time.

Well, I'm not saying your forearm is the only place you should place it. Your right chest is as good a place as any. All I wanted to say was that if other people's opinion would've been the only thing preventing you from having it put on your forearm then that would've been a shame.

Yeah? What the hell do you suggest? He doesn't want it to ruin any opprtunities (something I doubt it will) by placing it on the forearm, having a quote on the chest might not look on a tall and skinny person (no offense).. My other advice would be across your back in big letters. Enough space, and it can look cool with the right fonts.

Me myself, would consider getting it in two separate pieces, like I have on my chest. One part of the quote tied to a skull on the right side of my chest and the other part of it tied to a black rose on the other side of the chest. A simple quote is a bit, eh, simple if you ask me. Considered any fonts, Fridge?

EDIT: Woops, I don't know where my biceps are, haha. Anyway, that spot, the inside of my upper arm, is already taken.

No offense at all, mate, don't be ridiculous. Some people have told me that they think chest phrases actually look better on skinny people.
Anyway, I do like your chest quote, but I'm actually going for simplicity. Fonts... Being a quote from Burns, it'll be a celtic font, but one looking more like calligraphy than block letters. Unfortunately, I'm absolutely shite at drawing, so I can't do it for myself. I've been browsing fonts online for the past hour. Bahh.

Yeah yeah, I know, it's a matter of taste.. I'm a big guy, and I just don't see the appeal in a quote going across the chest of a skinny guy :P

I don't know, every chest tattoo I see on skinny people are centered in some way and not in any way crossing the chest unless it's big and theme-y.

Is the insidie of both your upper arms taken? And hey, it's not particularly hard to conceal a tattoo by the way. I'm getting my right forearm sleeved tomorrow, and already have a tattoo on my left forearm, and a simple shirt does the trick for interviews and whatnot.

Well, the lettering would be "classy" or "delicate" rather than macho and imposing, I agree that I could not pull off something "hardcore" or whatever. Someone did recommend the phrase going in a circle in the middle of my chest, but I'm not too sure if I like the circle. In fact, I think I don't, at least not for a phrase. Has to be legible, for chrissakes.

No, only my right triceps space is taken, left one's still free.

Fair enough, shirts do the trick, but it's having to conceal them in the workplace that might be an issue. Wouldn't like to be forced to wear long sleeves all the time.

I definitely see that one, one would think that in my line of work (institutions and such) one wouldn't like visible tattoos, but they're being quite liberal about it actually..

Anyway, the inside of your upper arm isn't taken? Why not place it there? Something like this (just an example, I know it looks terrible right there). Have you considered the ribs by the way?

I don't know, I was sort of thinking of saving the other triceps for another non-phrase tat. Don't really like the idea of a phrase there. I did consider the ribs, and I like it more than the triceps. Don't know how good it would look on me though, and it's a bit too hidden for something like what the tat is supposed to be. I'm really not shirtless often enough to justify it :D
