Ok, I know we live in a Dog eat Dog world. The state of the music industry sucks really bad. But I don't see bands uniting together like they did back in the day. It seems like it would be easier if bands helped each other out than tear each other down. Is there anyone out there who knows what I am talking about?

No.

Yeah, I do, and I'm not being understanding just because she's a chick.

Too much elitism among many bands these days.

She says she is, at any rate.

I know very well what she's talking about. The local music scene in Switzerland, back when I was still involved in Soul's Mirror, was incredibly arrogant and cutthroat. Everyone thought they were fucking divas and kings of metal, and in tiny communities the non-musicians would latch on to a certain band and proclaim to be a "fan", which meant slagging off any other band. The people in my band were all from a different area than most, so we managed to escape most of the sniping, but it still affected us.

There is always gonna be drama in any scene and some bands and fans are the type to trash talk other bands/fans, but I wouldn't say it's everyone. Then there's gonna be the temporary feuds because someone said something to piss someone else off, but it passes.

There are still a lot of bands out there that are on friendly terms with one another, who cooperate for shows, exposure and releases etc. I think you're generalizing too much.

Yes. I'm extremely resentful that I have spent insane amounts of times learning certain subjects and will act very arrogant when confronted with amateur rudiments of said subject in response to this knowledge because the respondent does not have the technical knowledge to understand what I am talking about.

In other words, someone oversimplifies something and tells me I'm wrong because it contradicts them, not theory or the subject at hand. What is most puzzling is that they usually can only demonstrate they possess less than 1/10th of the knowledge but insist that they are correct.

No, not this board for the most part, but RYM. Even when someone asks a theory related question and I give the the answer it leads to them trying to argue some point that does not contradict my answer but demonstrates they know the basics but couldn't possibly conceive my answer on their own. In other words some people think they know everything because they know how to repeat someone else's knowledge but can't come up with a single theory on their own or arrive at any conclusion that requires real understanding of the subject.

Electronics is the worst offender ever. I refused to learn like that in college. At this point I don't know if I would trust someone's opinion on the subject that has a PHD in electromagnetism. I would find a guy with a PHD in physics before I went that way. They don't operate with a disregard to fallacy or ignore entire aspects of science so their theories work, unlike EM theory.

GD, my response was directly responding to other musicians that I have met and especially "semi-pro" audio engineers like you would find at the Hoffman forums. I've never posted there because I'm not going to argue what is scientific fact or what is subjective that has been tested time and time again.

If people actually cared enough to challenge themselves and learn, I wouldn't be so negative about it. Anyone that ignorantly boasts that their lack of knowledge of music theory is an asset because it is "limiting" is asking to be called a fucking moron who has no business writing music. I actually ran into a band that had no idea you were supposed to end a song on the root note. I guess if they can convince the very few that are truly tone-deaf that they are good, which they were not, then they would have a market.

Adveser, your post suggests you didn't even read the OP or understand what they were saying. Either that or you didn't care. You're single-minded to the point where a thread can only ever revolve around what you have on your mind: which more and more seems like "gee, how can I brag to people some more while fitting it into the conversation somehow?" What does your post have to do with bands cooperating with each other instead of tearing each other a part? It just looks like another example of how you turn a thread around just to talk about how wonderful you are and how nobody listens to you or understands you...even when it has nothing to do with the thread at hand.

Actually, I'd argue that your post is another example of tearing others down. Especially when you claim some people have no business making music. You don't have to be a concert pianist to create music nor even have a background in theory. Some of the best bands out there had no formal training whatsoever.

In before "oh that's not what I was saying/you don't understand what I'm saying/you're just whining."

I don't agree with it.

Bands don't have a brotherly attitude anymore because they all have different goals and sensibilities that other bands for the most part violate. You can be superficially nice to anyone, but there is not going to be a sense respect common among everyone when there's 75 sub-genres that take an opposing stance on how music should be made.

You guys take what I say to most ridiculous extremes. Someone that learns everything by copying someone else can say they don't know jack shit all they want, but they clearly have learned if their music is sound in theory, which is obvious if it is enjoyable and not constantly tense and goes in no direction.

It's a straw man to say that about Ace Frehley. He may have never read a theory book, but he understands theory whether he knows it or likes it.

Some people like nothing but unresolving dissonant music with no regard for anything. That is their opinion. My opinion is not as authoritative as some people like to believe. It's as worthless as a deaf person who can only feel vibrations music at 20-150hz.

I don't really know what you're talking about to be honest.

Obviously people who log on to message boards will tear bands down but that's just people being annoying.

I literally do not understand how my posts are not discussing the original topic. Especially considering I gave my opinion on how I see other bands most of the time and why I feel that having a negative opinion can easily be justified.

Do you guys just seriously don't understand what I'm writing at all? That is the only conclusion I can draw from that kind of comment.
